Six Americans Released After Attempting to Send Bottles to North Korea

Incheon police announced on June 28, 2025, that all six Americans, including a man in his 50s identified as A, who were detained for attempting to send 1,300 bottles containing rice, U.S. dollars, and Bibles to North Korea, have been released. The Incheon Police Agency's anti-corruption unit confirmed that A was released around 3 PM, while the other five were released earlier that morning. During the investigation, the individuals were reported to have met with officials from the U.S. Embassy in South Korea. Authorities are currently analyzing the contents of the bottles, which included 2-liter containers filled with rice, dollar bills, a USB drive containing Korean films, and rolled-up Bibles, but did not contain any leaflets criticizing the North Korean regime. The incident occurred at Mangwol-dong Fortress in Ganghwa County, where the bottles were intended to be sent adrift towards North Korea, taking advantage of the tidal currents. Last November, the Ganghwa County government had issued an administrative order prohibiting the distribution of leaflets and similar materials directed at North Korea.
