The Seoul High Prosecutors' Office has recently dispatched two prosecutors to reinvestigate the allegations surrounding Kim Geon-hee, the wife of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, in connection with the Deutsche Motors stock manipulation case. Legal experts suggest that this staffing move indicates a potential acceleration in the investigation process.

On May 12, it was reported that the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office decided to reopen the investigation into Kim's alleged violations of the Capital Markets Act, following an appeal regarding her case that was filed on April 25. Three prosecutors, including Choi Haeng-gwan (33rd Judicial Research and Training Institute), have been assigned to this reinvestigation.

Kim Geon-hee is accused of being involved as a 'money provider' in a scheme orchestrated by former Deutsche Motors chairman Kwon Oh-soo, who allegedly manipulated stock prices from 2009 to 2012 using various accomplices. The allegations were brought to light in April 2020 when former Democratic Party lawmaker Choi Kang-wook and others reported her as a co-conspirator in the case while Yoon was serving as the Prosecutor General.

Initially, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office concluded in October 2021, after 4 years and 6 months of investigation, that there was insufficient evidence to charge Kim with conspiracy or aiding in the stock manipulation. They acknowledged that her accounts were involved but determined that there was no clear evidence of her participation or knowledge of the manipulation.

However, Choi, the complainant, contested the decision, leading to the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office reviewing the case since November of last year. The reinvestigation is now being handled directly by the Criminal Division of the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office, which has deemed it necessary to conduct further inquiries into related parties, especially after a Supreme Court ruling regarding Kwon and other accomplices was finalized last month.

During this reinvestigation, prosecutors are focusing on determining the extent of Kim's awareness and involvement in the stock manipulation activities. There are also discussions about potentially summoning Kim for questioning.

He further lamented, "When they offered to connect me to another consultant, it turned out to be the same department I had initially contacted. My mental state was shattered. I understand that the consultants are working hard, but the response is just too inadequate." 

Fortunately, no further damage was reported. Two days later, Kim announced, "It took me a day and a half, but I finally managed to cancel my account. It was truly a terrifying day." 

Kim Jaejoong debuted in 2003 as a member of the group TVXQ (동방신기) and has been surrounded by rumors of his wealth, including claims of a net worth of 1 trillion won. He fueled these speculations by revealing that he had used a black card, issued only to the top 0.05% of VIPs in South Korea, for about 12 years. In a recent appearance on a YouTube channel, he clarified, "They included all the cars I've driven over the past 20 years in my asset list. Real estate can come and go, and I buy and sell cars. If I included everything in my asset list, it might total 1 trillion won, but that's not how income works, and that structure doesn't exist."

In Daegu, two active police officers have been arrested and charged for allegedly accepting bribes totaling millions of won from illegal gambling and escort service operators in exchange for providing them with information about law enforcement activities. The Daegu District Prosecutor's Office announced on May 12, 2025, that Officer A (46) from a police station in Gyeongbuk and Officer B (45) from a Daegu police station have been indicted on charges of bribery.

According to the prosecution, Officer A received bribes of 63.86 million won from escort service operator C (50) and 100.96 million won from illegal gambling operator D (49) between 2019 and July 2022 in return for sharing information about police crackdowns. Officer B is accused of accepting 23.9 million won from C over a period of approximately seven months starting in September 2019.

Additionally, Officer A allegedly encouraged C to file a false report claiming that D had bribed the police, suggesting that this could lead to D's arrest. During this process, A disclosed the names of two fellow officers to C and made false reports to a superior officer at the Daegu Police Agency regarding the bribery.

Officer B was also found to have submitted a letter to the court requesting leniency for D, who was charged with violating the Gaming Industry Promotion Act.
