Shin Ae-ra Addresses False Death Rumors on Instagram

Actress Shin Ae-ra recently expressed her displeasure regarding false news about her death. On June 14, she posted a video on her Instagram stating, "I am alive!" In the video, she mentioned that she was volunteering at a children's welfare facility and reassured her fans, saying, "I am very much alive. I have not died."
She revealed that a fellow volunteer had called her in tears, asking if she had passed away, and questioned the motives behind such baseless rumors. "What kind of benefit do people gain from spreading such horrific news?" she asked.
Shin also pointed out that she is not the only celebrity affected by these rumors, urging fans to search for names on portal sites if they encounter similar news. "Unless it is reported by a credible media outlet, it is all fake. Please do not believe it," she advised, adding, "I am healthy and alive, and I hope you all stay healthy too."
Fellow actress Yoon Yoo-sun commented on her post, stating that many people had inquired about the rumors, emphasizing the need for better discernment in the face of rampant fake news.
Earlier in March, Shin was also a victim of a deepfake news story claiming she had been arrested, which led her to warn against falling for such absurd tactics and hint at legal action.
The entertainment industry has been grappling with a surge of fake death rumors, particularly on platforms like YouTube and social media. On June 3, actress Ko Hyun-jung addressed her own death rumors, which surfaced after she missed a press conference for the drama 'Namib' last December. She reassured fans, saying, "I am not dead. I am recovering well and you don’t need to worry. Thank you."
Comedian Park Jun-hyung also addressed his own death rumors on May 31, stating, "I am still alive. Thank you to everyone who sent me supportive messages."
According to the Information and Communications Network Act, those who publicly disclose false information with the intent to defame others can face up to seven years in prison, disqualification from holding certain positions for up to ten years, or fines of up to 50 million won.
