Severe Rainfall Leads to 18 Deaths and Thousands Displaced in South Korea

Since July 16, South Korea has experienced heavy rainfall resulting in 18 confirmed deaths across the nation. According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's daily report on July 21, as of 9 PM the previous day, there were also 9 individuals reported missing due to the extreme weather conditions. The hardest-hit area was Sancheong (산청) in Gyeongsangnam-do, where 10 fatalities occurred. Other affected regions include Gapyeong (가평) in Gyeonggi-do with 2 deaths, and Seosan (서산) in Chungcheongnam-do, which also reported 2 fatalities. Additionally, one death each was recorded in Osan (오산), Pocheon (포천), Dangjin (당진), and Buk-gu (북구) in Gwangju.

The missing persons include 4 from both Gapyeong and Sancheong, and 1 from Buk-gu in Gwangju. The Ministry has indicated that the situation may change as rescue and recovery operations are ongoing.

The recent heavy rains have displaced a total of 14,166 individuals across 15 provinces, with 2,653 people still unable to return home. As of 6 PM the previous day, there were 1,999 reported damages to public facilities, including road flooding and landslides, and 2,238 damages to private properties and agricultural lands.

Following the lifting of heavy rain warnings and advisories, the government downgraded the rain crisis alert level from 'serious' to 'caution' as of 6 PM on July 20, and also lifted the emergency response phase.
