Severe Rainfall in South Korea Claims 18 Lives and Leaves Thousands Displaced

As of July 21, 2025, heavy rainfall that began on July 16 has resulted in 18 fatalities across South Korea, according to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's daily report on national safety management. The report, updated at 9 PM the previous day, also noted that 9 individuals are currently missing. The hardest-hit area was Sancheong (산청) in Gyeongsangnam-do, where 10 deaths were reported. Other fatalities included 2 in Gapyeong (가평), 2 in Seosan (서산), and 1 each in Osan (오산), Pocheon (포천), Dangjin (당진), and Buk-gu in Gwangju (광주).
Among the missing, 4 are from both Gapyeong and Sancheong, with 1 from Buk-gu in Gwangju. The Ministry has indicated that the situation may change as rescue and recovery operations are ongoing.
The disaster has displaced a total of 14,166 people from 9,887 households across 15 provinces. Of these, 2,653 individuals have yet to return home.
As of 6 PM the previous day, damage to public infrastructure, including road flooding, landslides, and river facility collapses, has been reported at 1,999 locations. Additionally, 2,238 cases of damage to private properties and agricultural land have been recorded.
Following the lifting of heavy rain warnings and advisories, the government downgraded the rain crisis alert level from 'serious' to 'caution' as of 6 PM on July 20 and has also lifted the emergency response phase 3 status.
