Seoul Unveils 'Garden of Gratitude' to Honor Korean War Veterans

On June 8, 2025, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon introduced the 'Garden of Gratitude' at Gwanghwamun Square, a tribute to the descendants of soldiers from 22 nations who fought in the Korean War. The event welcomed 130 participants from the 'UN Veterans Descendants Exchange Camp,' organized by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs. Among the attendees were descendants of veterans from Ethiopia and the Netherlands, currently studying in South Korea. Mayor Oh emphasized the unity of 1.95 million young people from 22 countries who defended freedom 75 years ago, referring to the participants as 'young leaders who honor the legacy of heroes who protected Korea.' He expressed the intention for the garden to serve not only as a memorial but also as a platform for fostering future-oriented exchanges that promote the values of freedom, peace, and friendship. The garden will feature 22 stone pillars, each 5.7 to 7 meters tall, symbolizing the nations that participated in the war, with lights illuminating them up to 100 meters high. The city announced plans to increase the number of pillars to 23 by adding one for South Korea. Currently, eight countries, including India, Greece, and Germany, have expressed their willingness to donate stones for the pillars, with ongoing discussions with other nations to facilitate contributions post-completion.
