Ryu Hyun-jin Reveals Why He Chose the LA Dodgers

In a recent episode of MBC's 심장을 울려라 강연자들 (Heartfelt Lecturers), Ryu Hyun-jin, known as the 'Korean Monster', shared insights into his baseball career and personal life after returning to Hanwha Eagles after 12 years. Ryu discussed his journey to Major League Baseball (MLB), revealing the behind-the-scenes story of his signing with the LA Dodgers in 2012. He signed a six-year contract worth approximately 39 billion won, and when asked why he chose the Dodgers among many teams, he explained that the Dodgers offered the highest bid of around $26 million through the posting system, which allows teams to negotiate with players from other leagues. However, he noted that the negotiation process was challenging, stating, "I had to sign within 30 days, and if I went even a second over, it would be a problem." Ryu revealed that he was negotiating until the last three minutes, insisting on including a minor league opt-out clause in his contract. He emphasized the importance of this clause, stating, "I was the first Korean player to enter through the posting system, and I wanted to be recognized for my value in the MLB. I believed that having this precedent would help future Korean players receive better treatment."
