Rosé Sets New K-Pop Solo Record on Billboard 200 with 'ROSIE'

Rosé (로제), a member of the iconic K-pop girl group BLACKPINK, has made history by achieving a new record for K-pop female solo artists on the Billboard 200 chart. According to a preview article published on Billboard's website on December 15, her debut studio album 'ROSIE' (로지), released on December 6, sold approximately 102,000 copies in its first week, securing the third position on the December 21 chart.
The Billboard 200 rankings are determined by combining traditional album sales with streaming data converted into album sales (SEA - streaming equivalent albums) and digital downloads also converted into album sales (TEA - track equivalent albums). For 'ROSIE', physical album sales accounted for 70,000 copies, while SEA contributed 30,100 units, and TEA added 1,000 units.
This achievement marks the highest ranking for a K-pop female solo artist, surpassing the previous record held by Nayeon (나연) of another leading K-pop girl group, TWICE, whose solo mini-albums 'IM NAYEON' and 'NA' reached seventh place. Other TWICE members, Jihyo (지효) and Tzuyu (쯔위), also had their debut albums chart at 14th and 19th, respectively.
The first K-pop artist to enter the Billboard 200 was female soloist BoA (보아) in 2009, whose self-titled debut album peaked at 127th.
As a member of BLACKPINK, Rosé previously contributed to the group becoming the first K-pop girl group to reach number one on the Billboard 200 with their second studio album 'BORN PINK' (본 핑크) in September 2022. Their first album 'THE ALBUM' also achieved a second-place ranking.
Additionally, 'ROSIE' debuted at fourth place on the UK Official Albums Chart for the week of December 13-19, making Rosé the first K-pop female solo artist to enter this chart. The pre-release single 'Apartment', co-written with American pop star Bruno Mars, reached eighth on the Billboard Hot 100 and second on the Official Singles Chart, setting multiple records for K-pop female soloists.
Meanwhile, TWICE's latest mini-album 'STRATEGY' (스트래티지), released on the same day as Rosé's album, debuted at fourth on the Billboard 200 with sales of approximately 88,000 copies, including 81,000 physical albums, 6,500 SEA units, and under 500 TEA units.
TWICE has previously topped the Billboard 200 with their mini-album 'WITH YOU-th' (위드 유-스) and has now achieved their sixth consecutive entry into the top 10 of the Billboard 200, the most for any K-pop girl group. Their previous albums, including 'Formula of Love: O+T=<3' and 'BETWEEN 1&2', both reached third place, while 'Taste of Love' peaked at sixth, and 'READY TO BE' reached second.
This week, Taylor Swift's (테일러 스위프트) latest album 'The Tortured Poet's Department' remains at number one on the Billboard 200, marking a total of 17 weeks at the top.
