Remembering Jonghyun: Seven Years Since His Passing

It has been seven years since the passing of Jonghyun (종현), a shining star of the K-pop world. Although he left us too soon, his memories and music continue to resonate in the hearts of many. On December 18, 2024, SM Entertainment shared a heartfelt tribute on SHINee's official account, posting a stage photo of Jonghyun with the message, "We will always love you." Fans joined in mourning, expressing their feelings with comments like 'I miss you,' 'I love you,' and 'I long for you.'
SHINee members also keep Jonghyun close to their hearts. In June, during an episode of MBC's 'How Do You Play? - Our Festival,' they revealed that all five members, including Jonghyun, had matching friendship rings, evoking deep emotions among fans. On the anniversary of his passing, Minho (민호) captured the tribute post on SHINee's account and wrote, "I love you so much," further highlighting the group's enduring bond with their late member.
Jonghyun debuted with SHINee in 2008, contributing to the group's success with hits like 'Replay' (누난 너무 예뻐), 'Love Like Oxygen' (산소 같은 너), 'Ring Ding Dong' (링딩동), and 'Lucifer' (루시퍼), marking a new era for contemporary bands. Renowned for his exceptional vocal talent, he led the group while also proving his skills as a singer-songwriter with solo tracks like 'Déjà-Boo' (데자-부) and 'Love' (좋아). He showcased his songwriting prowess by composing songs for other artists, including IU's 'Depression Clock' (우울시계) and Lee Hi's 'Breathe' (한숨).
Tragically, Jonghyun was found in a state of cardiac arrest on December 18, 2017, in a residence in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul, at the young age of 27. His suicide note revealed his struggles with depression, stating, "What more can I say? Just tell me I did well. I worked hard. Even if I can't smile, please don't blame me. You did well. You really worked hard. Goodbye."
In 2018, his family established the 'Shining Foundation' using the royalties he left behind, aimed at providing scholarships for young artists facing difficult times.
