Remembering Hyun Chul: A Tribute to the Legendary Trot Singer on His First Anniversary

On July 15, 2024, the music world commemorated the first anniversary of the passing of Hyun Chul (현철), a beloved figure in the Korean trot genre, who left us at the age of 82. Known for his hit songs such as 'Love is Like a Butterfly' (사랑은 나비인가봐), 'Bongseonhwa Yeonjeong' (봉선화 연정), and 'I Don't Like It' (싫다 싫어), Hyun Chul's music is deeply embedded in the memories of many.
Reflecting on personal memories, I recall my university days in 1986 when a senior, who was the student council president, sang 'Love is Like a Butterfly' during a gathering. His heartfelt rendition stood out, especially during a time when student protests dominated the atmosphere, showcasing a different side of student life.
Hyun Chul, who rose to fame in the late 1980s and 1990s, became a household name, with even those who weren't fans of trot knowing at least a few of his songs, including 'Always Thinking of You' (앉으나 서나 당신 생각) and 'Return My Youth' (청춘을 돌려다오). After years of struggling as an unknown artist, he achieved significant recognition in his late 40s, winning the KBS Song Festival in 1989 with 'Bongseonhwa' and again in 1990 with 'I Don't Like It.' He was later celebrated as one of the 'Four Kings of Trot' alongside Song Dae Kwan, Tae Jin Ah, and Seol Woon Do.
Following his passing, an obituary by Park Eun Joo, a deputy editor at Chosun Ilbo, highlighted Hyun Chul's impact on the Korean music scene, noting that he extended the lifespan of Korean singers at a time when the industry was less welcoming to older artists. His unique vocal style, particularly his ability to deliver emotional nuances, defined the charm of Hyun Chul's trot.
In December 2023, a special episode of TV Chosun's 'Tuesday Night is Good' featured the 'Hyun Chul Music Festival.' Although he was unable to attend due to illness, he expressed his gratitude in a heartfelt letter to the production team, thanking his talented junior artists for keeping his name alive.
Hyun Chul's funeral was notably held as the first 'Korean Singer's Funeral' in the country. On July 18, amidst heavy rain, over 70 fellow artists gathered to bid farewell, singing his hit 'Always Thinking of You.' Many prominent figures from the music industry, including Lee Ja Yeon, Tae Jin Ah, and In Soon Yi, paid their respects, while floral tributes from other artists adorned the venue, showcasing the deep respect and love for Hyun Chul's legacy.
