Remembering Goo Hara on the 5th Anniversary of Her Passing: The Eternal Center of KARA

Today, November 24, marks the fifth anniversary of the passing of Goo Hara, the beloved center of the girl group KARA, who is forever associated with the iconic song "Pretty Girl!". Goo Hara tragically left this world on November 24, 2019, at the young age of 28. She was found deceased in her home in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, after a housekeeper reported the incident. Following a police investigation, it was determined that her death was not the result of any criminal activity.
Goo Hara joined KARA in 2008 and debuted with the hit song "Pretty Girl." She played a significant role in the group's rise to fame with numerous hits such as "Honey," "Mr.," "Lupin," and "STEP." In addition to her music career, she ventured into acting with roles in dramas like "City Hunter" and "Sound of Footsteps," and released her solo album "Alohara."
However, in 2018, while pursuing individual activities, Goo Hara became embroiled in a legal battle with her former boyfriend, hair designer Choi Jong-bum, over allegations of assault, threats, and illegal filming. The court ultimately recognized four charges against Choi, excluding the illegal filming, and he was sentenced to one year in prison in 2020, after Goo Hara's passing. Choi served his sentence and was released in July 2021, sparking public outrage.
Goo Hara's death also led to family disputes. Her estranged mother, who had not been in contact with her since she was nine years old, appeared at her funeral demanding a share of her inheritance. In response, Goo Hara's brother, Goo Ho-in, filed a lawsuit challenging her mother's claim, citing her failure to fulfill parental duties. The Gwangju Family Court recognized the contributions of their father as the primary caregiver and ruled in favor of a 60-40 inheritance split.
Additionally, Goo Ho-in has advocated for the enactment of the so-called "Goo Hara Law," which would limit inheritance rights for parents who neglect their caregiving responsibilities. This law has successfully passed through the National Assembly and is set to take effect in January 2026.
On November 29, 2022, the remaining members of KARA—Park Gyuri, Han Seungyeon, Nicole, Kang Jiyoung, and Heo Youngji—reunited for a full group comeback with the song "When I Move," marking their first release in seven years. They further showcased their enduring legacy with the special digital single "I Do I Do" on July 24. Even now, Goo Hara's name remains an integral part of KARA, solidifying her lasting impact as the eternal center of the group.
