Public Official Arrested for Repeated Sexual Assault of Minor in South Korea

A public official from Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, has been arrested for multiple counts of sexual assault against a minor he met through a chat application. The Wonmi Police Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, announced on July 3 that they have detained a 55-year-old man, referred to as A, under charges related to the Sexual Protection of Children and Adolescents Act.
The suspect is accused of sexually assaulting a minor, identified as B, in an apartment in Bucheon’s Wonmi District back in March. Reports indicate that A assaulted B nine times and subjected her to sexual abuse. During the incidents, he also allegedly harmed B's mother.
Following a digital forensic examination of A's mobile phone and subsequent questioning, police applied for a pre-arrest warrant. The Incheon District Court's Bucheon branch granted the warrant, citing concerns that A might flee or destroy evidence. The Chungju city government has been notified of the investigation and has suspended A from his position.
A police official stated that they plan to conclude the investigation soon and proceed with the case against A.
