Public Frustration Over Traffic Disruptions During 'Squid Game' Parade

On the afternoon of June 28, a large-scale parade themed around the hit Netflix series 'Squid Game' took place in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, leading to significant traffic disruptions on Sejong-daero. Buses were forced to skip stops, prompting complaints from citizens who expressed their frustration, stating, "I couldn't catch my bus because of 'Squid Game.'"

The parade coincided with the release of the final season of 'Squid Game,' attracting an estimated 5,000 participants according to police estimates. The event kicked off at 7:30 PM from the Gwanghwamun intersection and proceeded along Sejong-daero to Seoul Plaza, where various activities, including the iconic game 'Mugunghwa Kkot-i Pieot Seumnida' (Red Light, Green Light), were held.

Traffic restrictions began around 7 PM, affecting several lanes on Sejong-daero, with four central lanes closed and two lanes blocked in the direction of Gwanghwamun. By 8:30 PM, traffic was moving at a crawl, averaging 15.4 km/h, and restrictions were lifted around 9 PM.

Additionally, the bus stop in front of the Sejong Center was also closed to bus traffic. Social media was abuzz with comments from frustrated citizens, with one user questioning, "How am I supposed to take the bus with the 'Squid Game' event blocking everything?" Another remarked on the absurdity of blocking public transport for a show that is rated for older audiences.

At approximately 7:50 PM, a float featuring the character 'Younghee' entered the Sejong-daero intersection, causing a brief traffic halt. Earlier in the day, 14 buses were double-parked near Gyeongbokgung Station in preparation for the event, and parade vehicles lined up from the Seoul Government Complex to the Gwanghwamun intersection.

This parade was part of the '2025 K-Content Seoul Travel Week,' co-hosted by the Seoul City and Netflix. The city had set up traffic signs and barriers along major roads to manage the event, coordinating with local police to ensure safety.
