A North Korean travel agency has announced plans to recruit tourists for the upcoming Pyongyang International Trade Fair, scheduled from October 24 to November 1, 2025. However, participation is restricted for journalists and travel content creators. 

Young Pioneer Tours, based in China, stated on their website that this event offers a unique opportunity for foreign visitors to be among the first to attend the trade fair and explore Myohyangsan, a site that has been closed to Western tourists since 2020. The agency will assist with visa applications, allowing attendees to visit the capital and participate in the fair. 

The Pyongyang International Trade Fair (PITF) will take place from October 27 to 31 at the Okryu Exhibition Hall, featuring over 450 booths showcasing machinery, IT, energy, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods, and daily necessities. Tourists will have the chance to attend both the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as visit notable sites such as the USS Pueblo, the Juche Tower, and Kim Il-sung Square. The itinerary also includes subway rides, shopping at local department stores, and exploring the latest streets in Pyongyang. 

Additionally, the tour will include a visit to Myohyangsan, where participants can explore one of the few remaining Buddhist temples in North Korea, experience cave tours, and stay overnight at a luxury hotel. 

However, the agency has clarified that due to guidelines from the exhibition organizers, journalists, travel content creators, and influencers are not permitted to join this tour. This decision follows a previous incident in February when North Korea briefly allowed group tourism for Western visitors, only to abruptly halt it after influencers shared sensitive information about the country on social media. 

This latest initiative reflects North Korea's cautious approach to tourism, balancing the desire to attract foreign visitors with the need to control the narrative surrounding the country.

The South Korean government has expressed disappointment after its attempt to question Japan's adherence to commitments made regarding the Hashima Island (군함도) coal mine, a site of forced labor during the Japanese occupation, was thwarted at the UNESCO World Heritage Committee's 47th session held in Paris on July 7, 2025. 

During the meeting, the South Korean representative argued that Japan's insufficient actions should be reassessed in this year's committee discussions. However, Japan countered that the matter should be addressed bilaterally rather than through the committee, leading to the submission of a revised proposal to remove the agenda item. South Korea rejected this and called for a vote. 

The vote, conducted via secret ballot among 21 member countries, resulted in Japan's proposal passing with 7 votes in favor and 3 against, while some countries appeared to abstain. This outcome indicates a preference among committee members for resolving the issue through direct discussions between South Korea and Japan rather than through UNESCO. 

As a result, it has become increasingly difficult for South Korea to raise issues related to Hashima Island at UNESCO during the ongoing session, which will last until July 16. Hashima, also known as Gunkanjima, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in July 2015 as part of Japan's industrial revolution heritage. 

Japan had publicly committed to addressing the forced labor of Koreans during the listing process but has since failed to fulfill this promise. Critics argue that Japan has instead intensified claims that there was no coercion involved in the recruitment of Korean laborers and has focused on presenting a narrative favorable to its own history. 

The information center opened in 2020 has been criticized for omitting any mention of Korean forced labor, instead highlighting Japan's industrial achievements, which some see as a distortion of history. The center's location in Tokyo, rather than in Kyushu, where many heritage sites are located, has also sparked controversy. 

Over the past decade, Japan has repeatedly faced scrutiny from the committee regarding its inadequate follow-up actions, with four related decisions adopted in 2015, 2018, 2021, and 2023. However, the most recent decision in 2023 required Japan to submit an 'update report' rather than a formal report, which would automatically be subject to committee review. This change occurred when South Korea was not a member of the committee, limiting its negotiating power. 

In response, South Korea has been actively pursuing diplomatic efforts to bring this issue back to the committee's agenda. Conversely, Japan argued that since it has already undergone multiple reviews by the committee, the matter should now be resolved through bilateral discussions with South Korea. The lack of consensus ultimately led to the unprecedented failure to formalize the agenda item. 

Analysts suggest that Japan's significant financial contributions to UNESCO and the prolonged nature of discussions surrounding this issue influenced the committee's decision. While the South Korean government remains committed to revisiting Japan's inadequate fulfillment of its promises, it appears challenging to do so within the UNESCO framework. Additionally, Japan's rigid stance on historical issues may further strain relations between the two countries.

As obesity rates among Korean youth continue to rise, a recent report indicates that physical activity levels remain stagnant. The reliance on school-based physical education programs is insufficient, and there is a pressing need for these initiatives to extend into homes and communities.

According to a report released on July 7, 2025, by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, the participation rate in the recommended physical activity benchmark of '60 minutes a day, five days a week' was alarmingly low, with only 25.1% of boys and 8.9% of girls meeting this standard last year. This is only a slight increase from 2015, when the figures were 20.5% for boys and 7.4% for girls. During the same period, obesity rates surged, with boys increasing from 8.8% to 15.5% and girls from 6.1% to 9.2%.

The report emphasizes that the decline in physical activity, which was exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic, has not recovered even after its conclusion. It noted that the time spent sitting for non-learning activities increased from an average of 2.8 hours per day in 2019 to 3.8 hours in 2020, and remained at 3.3 hours in 2024, failing to revert to pre-pandemic levels. This lack of physical activity has led to developmental issues in physical fitness and a trend towards sedentary leisure activities.

To combat this deficiency in physical activity, the report suggests that responsibility should not rest solely on schools. It argues that physical activity is a broader lifestyle issue for students, and merely enhancing school sports programs will not suffice. Policies that treat student health as solely the concern of educational authorities have contributed to this problem. Instead, it proposes 'home-linked' approaches, where schools assign activities that families can do together, and 'community-linked' strategies, where local health centers manage programs for overweight students.

The report calls for the creation of environments that support and stimulate physical activity among students. A 2022 survey on youth health behaviors revealed that the primary motivation for students to engage in exercise or physical activities was enjoyment (33.3%), followed by health (20.6%) and weight loss (16.4%).
