Protests Erupt in Seoul Demanding Investigation into Former President Yoon Seok-yeol

On the evening of July 5, 2025, the Candlelight Victory Transition Action (촛불행동) organized a rally in Seoul, urging an investigation into former President Yoon Seok-yeol for charges of insurrection. The gathering took place between Exit 9 of the Kyodae Station and the intersection near the courthouse and prosecutor's office.

Participants occupied the road, holding signs that read 'Arrest Yoon Seok-yeol and Kim Geon-hee' and 'Dissolve the People Power Party.' Banners condemning U.S. pressure for war were also visible.

While the organizers reported an expected turnout of 10,000 to the police, unofficial estimates indicated only about 500 attendees at the rally's start at 6 PM. Regardless of the numbers, the protest significantly disrupted traffic in the area.

The police restricted three out of five lanes on Seocho-daero, causing severe congestion as buses, taxis, and private vehicles crowded the remaining lanes. According to the Seoul Traffic Information System (TOPIS), the average speed for vehicles between Seocho Station and the courthouse was a mere 2 km/h, slower than walking speed.

The Candlelight Action plans to march towards Nonhyeon Station via Gangnam Station starting at 7:30 PM, suggesting that traffic delays in the Gangnam area will persist well into the night.
