Prosecutors Seek Prison Sentences for Teachers in Student Death Case

In connection with the tragic death of a student during a field trip at a theme park in Sokcho, Gangwon Province, prosecutors have requested prison sentences for two elementary school teachers charged with negligent homicide. During a sentencing hearing on January 21 at the Chuncheon District Court, presided over by Judge Shin Dong-il, the prosecution sought a one-year prison term for both the homeroom teacher, identified as A (35), and the supervising teacher, B (39).

The prosecution explained that A failed to ensure the safety of the students after allowing them to disembark from a bus that had not yet parked properly, only checking the headcount without monitoring the students' movements. Meanwhile, B was absent from the scene at the time of the incident, which contributed to the negligence.

The incident occurred in November 2022 when a 13-year-old student, referred to as D, was struck by a bus while participating in the field trip at the theme park's parking lot. A verdict in this case is expected to be delivered on February 11.
