Prosecutors have requested one-year prison sentences for two women accused of extorting over 200 million won from popular YouTuber Tzuyang (real name Park Jung-won). The case was heard at the Seoul Central District Court, where Judge Koo Chang-kyu presided over the sentencing hearing for the two defendants, identified as Kim in her 20s and Song in her 30s. 

The prosecution argued that the amount extorted was significant and the crime was serious. However, they noted that both women had confessed to their actions and expressed remorse, as well as reached a settlement with the victim. 

The defense attorney claimed that the crime was impulsive and that the defendants did not intend to harm the victim, asking for leniency. During her final statement, Kim expressed deep regret and promised not to repeat her actions, while Song also apologized to Tzuyang. 

The two women were charged with extorting approximately 216 million won from Tzuyang's YouTube channel producer between June 2021 and November 2022. Although they had no prior acquaintance with Tzuyang, they reportedly threatened the producer after hearing about Tzuyang from her ex-boyfriend, who had a history of violence against her.

The number of couples attempting to conceive through in vitro fertilization (IVF) has surged, resulting in the creation of approximately 800,000 embryos annually. The number of embryo transfers has also surpassed 200,000. According to data received by Kim Yoon, a member of the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee from the Democratic Party, a total of 783,860 new embryos were created last year, marking an 83.2% increase compared to 427,818 embryos in 2019. 

The annual number of embryos generated has steadily risen from 334,687 in 2016 to 550,724 in 2021, and last year saw a 30.7% increase from the previous year’s total of 599,851 embryos. 

The number of embryos actually used for implantation has also grown, with 201,496 embryos transferred last year, a 31.9% increase from 152,761 in 2019. However, the number of embryos that were not implanted and subsequently discarded has also risen. Last year, 533,266 embryos were disposed of, which is a staggering 104.7% increase from 2019. During IVF procedures, typically 1 to 3 embryos are implanted based on the woman's age and health status. If pregnancy occurs, the remaining embryos can be stored for future attempts, while those not used can be utilized in subsequent cycles. Embryos can be frozen for up to five years, after which they may be discarded if the couple chooses. 

While IVF is becoming more established in South Korea, there are calls for improvements in related regulations. A notable case involved actress Lee Si-young, who implanted frozen embryos without her ex-husband's consent during their marriage. Current laws require mutual consent for embryo creation, but there is no explicit regulation requiring both parties' agreement for implantation. A representative from the Ministry of Health and Welfare stated, 'We plan to discuss with experts whether there is a need to improve the procedures.'

A 37-year-old man, identified as A, has been sentenced to two years in prison for physically assaulting his eight-year-old son, B, during a mobile phone game. The ruling was made by Judge Kim Taek-seong at the Chuncheon District Court on July 18, 2025. In addition to the prison sentence, A was ordered to complete a 40-hour child abuse treatment program.

The incident occurred on January 30, 2025, at A's home in Hongcheon County, Gangwon Province. A became enraged when B secretly checked the location of A's game character and subsequently killed it. In a fit of anger, A physically abused B by grabbing his arm and throwing him.

On the same day, when A's wife, C (34), attempted to call emergency services, A confiscated her phone, damaged it, and threatened her with a weapon. During the trial, it was revealed that A had previously threatened a cousin-in-law with a weapon in August 2020, due to a misunderstanding involving insults.

The play 'Cherry Orchard' (벚꽃동산), produced by LG Arts Center, is set to embark on an international tour starting with performances in Hong Kong in September and Singapore in November, followed by shows in Australia and New York next year.

Yang Hyun-suk faced allegations of intimidating and coercing Han Seo-hee, who reported former iKON member B.I's drug purchase and use to the police, to change her testimony. Han Seo-hee claimed that the police failed to investigate B.I's drug use properly and accused Yang of threatening her.

In his defense, Yang stated that he only called Han Seo-hee to the YG office for fact-checking and did not interfere with the investigation. The first trial court found insufficient evidence to prove that Yang's comments, such as 'It would be easy to ruin your career in the entertainment industry,' instilled fear in Han Seo-hee, resulting in a not guilty verdict. The prosecution then added the charge of coercion of a meeting and appealed. The second trial court acquitted Yang of retaliatory intimidation but found him guilty of coercion, sentencing him to 6 months in prison with a 1-year probation. Yang Hyun-suk Accepts Supreme Court Ruling with Regret

Yang Hyun-suk, the chief producer of YG Entertainment, was confirmed guilty by the Supreme Court on July 18, 2025, for coercing a whistleblower in a drug investigation involving a member of his agency's idol group, iKON. The court sentenced him to six months in prison, suspended for one year. 

The Supreme Court's ruling upheld a previous decision by the appellate court, which found Yang guilty of violating laws against specific crimes, including coercive threats and forced meetings. Yang was accused of pressuring a whistleblower, referred to as A, to retract statements regarding drug use allegations against former iKON member B.I (Kim Han-bin). 

In 2016, A, a trainee at YG, initially reported B.I's drug use during a police investigation. However, A later retracted the statement, leading to the closure of the police inquiry into B.I. Afterward, A reported to the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission that Yang had pressured him to change his testimony, prompting a renewed police investigation. B.I was subsequently charged with drug purchase and use, receiving a sentence of three years in prison, suspended for four years. 

Investigations revealed that Yang had pressured A with statements like, 'What if B.I tests negative for drugs?' and 'If you become a singer, I can help you.' Initially, Yang was acquitted of coercive threats in the first trial, which concluded that while he had pressured A, it did not amount to threats that instilled fear. 

However, the prosecution appealed, adding charges of coercive meetings, arguing that Yang had exploited his position as the head of a major entertainment company to demand A's retraction. The appellate court ruled that while Yang was not guilty of coercive threats, he was guilty of coercive meetings, leading to the six-month prison sentence with a one-year suspension. The court noted that Yang's actions were serious given his social status and influence. 

Following the ruling, Yang expressed disappointment but stated he would accept the decision humbly and commit to his responsibilities at YG Entertainment moving forward.
