Prosecutors Conduct Search at Army Special Warfare Command Amid Emergency Martial Law Investigation

On December 11, 2024, prosecutors launched a forced investigation into the Army Special Warfare Command as part of their inquiry into the 'Emergency Martial Law' incident that occurred on December 3. The Special Investigation Headquarters, led by Park Se-hyun, the Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office, dispatched prosecutors, investigators, and military prosecutors to the command's base in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, to carry out the search. During the emergency martial law, troops from the 707th Special Mission Battalion were deployed to the National Assembly. Former Special Warfare Commander Kwak Jong-geun testified before the National Defense Committee the previous day, stating that President Yoon Suk-yeol had ordered, 'Break down the doors of the National Assembly and drag out the lawmakers.' He also revealed that he received instructions from former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun on December 1 to secure six locations, including the National Assembly, the National Election Commission, the Democratic Party headquarters, and polling sites, in preparation for the emergency martial law situation. The Special Investigation Headquarters had previously summoned Kwak as a witness for questioning on December 9.
