Prosecution Seeks Prison Sentences for Son of Lawmaker Charged with Drug Use

The prosecution has requested prison sentences for Lee Mo, the son of Lee Cheol-kyu, a member of the People Power Party, who has been indicted on charges of using synthetic marijuana. The first-instance verdict is scheduled for August 18.

During a sentencing hearing held on July 10 at the Seoul Central District Court, the prosecution asked for a five-year prison term for Lee Mo and a three-year term for his wife, Lim. Additionally, they sought five-year sentences for Lee's middle school friend, Jeong Mo, and his military senior, Kwon Mo, who were charged with selling drugs to Lee. The prosecution also requested the confiscation of 572,000 won from Lee and 623,000 won from Jeong.

Both Lee and Lim acknowledged all charges against them. In his final statement, Lee expressed regret, stating, "I have destroyed myself with drugs that should never even be thought of, no matter what happens." He added, "I worry that I have caused my parents distress and left my son with a significant pain as a father who could not care for him."

Lee further acknowledged the gravity of his actions, saying, "I know my crime is not light, but if given one more chance, I promise to live correctly and engage in good deeds like volunteering, so I do not regret my life later."

Lim also read a prepared statement, declaring, "I will not make any excuses." She vowed to never repeat her mistakes and committed to cutting ties with drugs, stating that she has been enduring the struggle and will seek counseling and treatment.

The couple, along with Jeong and Kwon, are accused of purchasing synthetic marijuana twice and using it on three occasions between October of last year and February of this year. They also attempted to buy liquid marijuana multiple times but were unsuccessful in those attempts.
