President Lee Jae-myung Visits Itaewon Tragedy Site and Han River Flood Control Center

On June 12, 2025, President Lee Jae-myung visited the Han River Flood Control Center in Dongjak-gu, Seoul, followed by a trip to the Itaewon tragedy site, known as '10·29 Memory and Safety Road.' During his visit, he emphasized the importance of national safety measures.
At the flood control center, President Lee instructed officials to assess the systems in place for disaster preparedness, particularly in light of the monsoon season that began in Jeju. His spokesperson, Kang Yu-jeong, stated that the President urged officials to inspect areas prone to flooding and to review the flood warning systems.
President Lee highlighted the need for public officials responsible for safety management to feel a sense of accountability. He remarked, 'Given the heavy responsibilities, it is essential to enhance the status and authority of the safety management system and ensure adequate compensation for their performance.' He requested that a personnel restructuring plan be developed to strengthen their authority and improve their status.
After inspecting the flood control measures, President Lee made an impromptu decision to pay his respects at the Itaewon tragedy site, where he laid flowers and interacted with citizens, shaking hands and taking photos with them.
