President Lee Jae-myung to Meet Families of Victims from Major Disasters

President Lee Jae-myung is set to meet with families of victims from significant tragedies, including the Sewol Ferry disaster and the Itaewon crowd crush, on July 16. The presidential spokesperson announced on July 2 that the meeting will also include families affected by the Muan Air disaster and the Osong underpass flooding incident. The day before, July 15, marks the second anniversary of the Osong tragedy, and families have previously requested the President's attendance at a memorial service. This meeting aims to provide comfort and facilitate dialogue with around 200 bereaved family members.
Since taking office, President Lee has emphasized the importance of preventing large-scale disasters. In his inaugural speech on June 4, he stated, "I will ensure that the truth behind social disasters is clearly established and work towards creating a safe society where the lives and property of citizens are not threatened." During a site inspection meeting on disaster preparedness held on July 12, he reiterated that predictable accidents should not occur due to negligence or indifference, asserting that such incidents will not happen under his administration.
