President Lee Jae-myung Hosts Luncheon with Political Leaders on Inauguration Day
On June 4, President Lee Jae-myung held a luncheon at the National Assembly's Sarangjae with National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik and leaders from both the ruling and opposition parties following his inauguration. The meal featured bibimbap, symbolizing unity.
During the gathering, President Lee acknowledged the challenges faced by the public, stating, "Politics must fulfill its fundamental role of alleviating the difficulties of the people and uniting them. I must lead by example."
Attendees included Park Chan-dae, the floor leader of the Democratic Party, Kim Yong-tae, the emergency committee chair of the People Power Party, and representatives from various other parties.
President Lee expressed his commitment to working closely with all leaders, saying, "I will serve both Representative Cheon Ha-ram and Representative Kim Yong-tae well. I hope to see you often." He emphasized the importance of compromise and collaboration in policymaking, stating, "I sincerely hope that we can create policies that everyone agrees on to improve the lives of our citizens."
He further called for a political environment characterized by dialogue and mutual recognition rather than hostility, encouraging frequent communication regardless of the agenda.
Kim Yong-tae congratulated President Lee on his election and expressed hopes for successful national reform and unity. However, he also criticized the Democratic Party's plans to push through certain legislative bills, voicing concerns about the implications for national unity.
The Democratic Party is set to address amendments to the Public Official Election Act and other laws in the upcoming parliamentary session, which has raised alarms among opposition leaders. Kim stated that if the ruling party acknowledges the core democratic value of proportional representation and seeks collaborative politics, the People Power Party would be willing to cooperate.
