President Lee Jae-myung Engages with Religious Leaders to Promote Unity

On July 9, President Lee Jae-myung held a luncheon meeting at the Yongsan Presidential Office with leaders from seven major religions, including Buddhism and Christianity. During the gathering, he expressed his hope that these leaders would play a significant role in fostering a more respectful, harmonious, and inclusive society.

Reflecting on his first month in office, President Lee noted concerns about the increasing division and conflict within society, which he had anticipated during the election campaign. He remarked, 'While there seems to be some healing over the past month, the political landscape remains unpredictable, making the role of religious leaders crucial.' He emphasized that religion fundamentally seeks love and respect, suggesting that the current era demands even greater contributions from these leaders.

Jinwoo Sunim, the head of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and co-chair of the Korean Council of Religious Leaders, acknowledged the responsibility of religious figures in comforting the anxious public. He stated, 'We should have done more to provide peace and comfort to the citizens, and we share in this responsibility.' He pledged that religious leaders would work alongside the President to create a more stable environment for the nation.

Expressing gratitude for the President's efforts, Jinwoo Sunim remarked, 'The President has faced threats to his life while establishing a stable foundation for the people. Personally, I am deeply thankful and hopeful that he will leverage his experience and wisdom to strengthen our nation.'

The meeting included representatives from various religious groups, such as the Jogye Order, Cheontae Order, Taego Order, the Korean Council of Churches, the Korean Catholic Bishops' Conference, Won Buddhism, Confucianism, Cheondogyo, and other ethnic religions.
