President Lee Jae-myung Condemns Abuse of Migrant Workers in Naju

On July 24, President Lee Jae-myung addressed a shocking incident involving the abuse of migrant workers at a brick factory in Naju, Jeollanam-do. He described the event as a 'barbaric violation of human rights' against vulnerable members of society and vowed that the government, including the Ministry of Employment and Labor, would take strict action against such abuses.
The incident, which was reported by the Jeollanam-do Migrant Workers Network, involved a Sri Lankan migrant worker in his 30s who was tied to a cargo load and lifted by a forklift. A video of the 58-second ordeal, filmed earlier this month, shows the worker being taunted by his Korean colleagues, who demanded he admit wrongdoing. After enduring repeated harassment, the victim sought help from labor organizations.
President Lee expressed disbelief that such an incident could occur in a nation recognized as a cultural powerhouse and a model of democracy. He emphasized that the treatment of those in vulnerable positions reflects the dignity of society, stating, 'Just as we value our citizens who travel abroad for work, the basic human rights of migrant workers must also be protected.' He highlighted that many South Korean workers have faced hardships abroad in search of better opportunities, contributing to the prosperity of the nation today.
