President Lee Jae-myung Appoints New Cabinet Ministers

On June 23, President Lee Jae-myung made his first cabinet appointments since the new government took office. Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik announced the nominees for ministers across 11 departments, including Baek Kyung-hoon for the Ministry of Science and ICT, Cho Hyun for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jeong Dong-young for the Ministry of Unification, and Ahn Gyu-baek for the Ministry of National Defense. Other nominees include Kwon Oh-eul for the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, Kim Sung-hwan for the Ministry of Environment, Kim Young-hoon for the Ministry of Employment and Labor, Kang Sun-woo for the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, Jeon Jae-soo for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and Han Sung-sook for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Mi-ryeong will continue in her role. Yoon Chang-ryeol has been appointed as the head of the Office for Government Policy Coordination. If Ahn Gyu-baek is confirmed as the Minister of National Defense, he will become the first civilian to hold the position in 64 years since the May 16 coup.
