Potential Pardons for Controversial Figures Ahead of Liberation Day
The Ministry of Justice has confirmed that it is in the process of selecting individuals for pardons ahead of the August 15 Liberation Day. This will mark the first special pardon under President Lee Jae-myung, just two months into his presidency. Notable figures such as former Justice Minister Cho Kuk, who is currently serving a sentence for his involvement in a college admissions scandal, are being considered for clemency.
According to sources, the Ministry has recently sent a directive to local prosecutors to identify potential candidates for pardon. Each district prosecutor's office will report on inmates who have received final sentences. Following this, the Ministry will convene a pardon review committee to finalize the list, which will then be submitted to President Lee for approval before being confirmed in a Cabinet meeting. The entire process of selecting pardon candidates and reporting to the presidential office is expected to take about three weeks.
In legal and political circles, there is significant discussion regarding the potential pardon of Cho Kuk, who is currently incarcerated at Anyang Correctional Institution. Additionally, there are calls for the pardon of Lee Hwa-young, the former Vice Governor of Gyeonggi Province, who is serving a lengthy sentence related to an illegal remittance case to North Korea.
Former President Yoon Suk-yeol granted pardons last year on Liberation Day to figures such as former Gyeongnam Governor Kim Kyung-soo and former Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Cho Yoon-sun.
