Police Officer and Prosecutor Charged for Leaking Investigation Details Related to Late Actor Lee Seon-kyun

A police officer and a prosecutor are facing charges for allegedly leaking sensitive investigation information related to the late actor Lee Seon-kyun, who died while under investigation for drug use. The Incheon District Prosecutors' Office announced on June 5, 2025, that a police officer in his 30s, referred to as A, and a prosecutor in his 40s, referred to as B, have been indicted for violating public duty confidentiality laws.

Additionally, a journalist in his 30s, referred to as C, has also been charged for receiving and sharing the real name and other personal details of the investigation subject. The prosecution decided not to press charges against three other journalists who were also involved, as the legal criteria for establishing a crime were not met.

Officer A is accused of photographing and transmitting a report from the Incheon Police Agency's Drug Crime Investigation Unit to journalists C and another reporter, which contained personal information about Lee's drug case. The media outlet that C is affiliated with reported the leaked information just a day after Lee's death on October 28, 2023.

Prosecutor B is alleged to have informed a reporter from a local media outlet about Lee's ongoing investigation and personal details over the phone, leading to the first report on October 19, 2023, titled 'Top Star L Under Investigation for Drug Charges.'

C is also accused of forwarding the investigation materials received from A to another journalist in November 2023.

Lee Seon-kyun was formally charged on October 14, 2023, and underwent three police interrogations over two months. He was found dead near Waryong Park in Jongno, Seoul, on December 26, 2023.

A spokesperson for the prosecution stated, 'We will respond strictly to violations of public officials' confidentiality obligations and indiscriminate leaks of personal information to protect citizens' rights.'
