Police Investigate Threats Against Medical Students Amid Ongoing Conflict

The Seoul Cyber Investigation Unit has launched an investigation into online threats directed at medical students and residents who have returned to work amid ongoing tensions between the government and medical professionals. On July 11, the police confirmed they received a request from the Ministry of Education to identify the author of a threatening post on the online community 'MediStaff', which is exclusive to verified medical students and doctors.
As discussions between the Lee Jae-myung administration and medical associations progress to resolve the conflict, the community has seen a surge of posts threatening retaliation against those who returned to their positions early. Users in the forum have referred to these individuals as '감귤' (citrus), a term derived from '감사한 의사' (grateful doctor), used sarcastically to mock those who have resumed work.
One user ominously stated, "Citrus, we are coming for you," and threatened violence upon their return. Another user warned, "Citrus, get ready to see what hell looks like." Additional posts included statements like, "Even if you return, those who crawled back first will be excluded," and "Citrus can even commit suicide," reflecting a disturbing tone of hostility.
As the dialogue between the government and the medical community accelerates, there is growing hope for the safe return of medical students and residents. However, there are increasing calls from within the medical field for protective measures for those who have returned early, as harassment and doxxing have been reported against them since the conflict began.
