Park Eun-tae Returns as Jesus in 20th Anniversary of 'Jesus Christ Superstar'

In a remarkable return after nine years, Park Eun-tae (43), a leading figure in Korean musical theater, reprises his role as Jesus in the 20th anniversary performance of 'Jesus Christ Superstar.' This production holds a special place in his heart, as he expressed, "If I could perform just one last time, it would be in this musical." During a recent meeting in the dressing room of the BBCH Hall at the Gwanglim Art Center in Seoul, he shared his thoughts on the challenges of the role, stating, "This is the most difficult role I've ever taken on. It requires reaching a level of intensity that feels almost unattainable."
Park Eun-tae's portrayal of Jesus is characterized by a serene yet powerful presence, standing like a glowing pillar on stage. He aims to depict Jesus as a superstar of ancient Palestine, embodying both strength and vulnerability. The musical unfolds over a week leading up to Jesus's crucifixion, exploring themes of doubt and sacrifice. "Why did people gravitate towards someone of humble origins with no backing? Internally, he must have felt fear and anxiety, yet outwardly, he remained composed. As he embraces his fate, the prophecies and revelations come together like a puzzle. I immerse myself in the situation without judging whether Jesus is divine or human," he explained.
The emotional climax of his performance comes during the song 'Gethsemane,' where Jesus questions and laments his impending death. Known for its challenging high notes, Park admitted, "It's incredibly difficult. I feel like I'm on the brink every time I perform it. I pray daily to deliver a good performance. Interestingly, it seems the audience appreciates my struggle even more. You can't earn money easily, after all!"
Despite this being his third time playing Jesus, Park still finds the musical to be filled with profound questions. Jesus grapples with the meaning of his death, while Judas questions the futility of it all. Park believes that the musical's enduring relevance lies in its ability to provoke thought and reflection, stating, "Even after over 50 years since its debut by Andrew Lloyd Webber in 1971, the questions posed in this musical continue to resonate and feel fresh."
Physically, the role is demanding, but Park views it as a transformative experience. He described the atmosphere during the performance, where the crowd dances joyfully while Jesus faces his fate, creating a surreal connection between the audience and the performers.
Park Eun-tae is often praised for his striking appearance as Jesus, a result of his rigorous self-discipline. He remarked, "Challenges and hardships are what people outside the theater face for survival. For someone in my position, such struggles feel like a luxury." He has even given up drinking beer before bed to maintain his health.
With numerous affectionate nicknames from fans, such as 'Eun Unni' and 'Eun Gak Mok Gak,' Park attributes his success to his humility, stating, "Not having been number one is my greatest strength. I believe that my continuous sense of inadequacy allows me to connect with the audience, who appreciate my efforts."
The performances will run until January 12, 2025, with ticket prices ranging from 60,000 to 150,000 KRW. Following the Seoul shows, the production is set to tour Busan and Sejong City.
