Park Eun-bin and Seol Kyung-gu Tease Unique Mentor-Student Dynamic in 'Hyperknife' at Disney Showcase

At the Disney Showcase held on November 21, 2024, in Singapore, actors Park Eun-bin (박은빈) and Seol Kyung-gu (설경구) generated excitement with their unprecedented mentor-student relationship in the upcoming Disney+ original series 'Hyperknife' (하이퍼나이프).
The Walt Disney Company hosted the event at Marina Bay Sands, where they unveiled content from the Asia-Pacific region, including lineups from Disney+ Korea and Disney+ Japan.
'Hyperknife' tells the gripping story of a doctor who resorts to illegal surgeries to make ends meet, leading to a fallout with his mentor that results in the loss of his medical license. The narrative takes a turn when the disgraced mentor returns, complicating the doctor's life further. Park Eun-bin plays the role of the neurosurgeon Jeong Se-ok (정세옥), while Seol Kyung-gu portrays the mentor Choi Deok-hee (최덕희). Directed by Kim Jung-hyun (김정현), the series is set to premiere in March 2025.
Both Park Eun-bin and Seol Kyung-gu, along with director Kim Jung-hyun, participated in discussions at the showcase. Park Eun-bin expressed her enthusiasm for portraying a troubled neurosurgeon, stating, "This will likely be Disney+'s first medical thriller. The complex genre and unique character traits will offer viewers an unprecedented experience. I believe audiences will enjoy the intricate relationship between my character and the mentor."
Seol Kyung-gu added, "The charm of our series lies in the dynamic between Se-ok and Deok-hee. Their relationship is filled with both affection and animosity, creating a mentor-student dynamic unlike anything seen before. I encourage everyone to look forward to it. This type of relationship has never been portrayed in previous works."
Director Kim Jung-hyun noted the dramatic emotional shifts and conflicts between the characters, emphasizing that the series will showcase a fresh perspective on the mentor-student relationship. He mentioned, "I followed their performances closely, allowing them to explore their characters without limitations. They presented such new aspects that I often found myself asking if what they were doing was acceptable." Park Eun-bin chimed in, saying, "We had a lot of fun and joy while working together."
In conclusion, Seol Kyung-gu remarked, "Our work is not meant to impart a lesson. Instead, it explores the fascinating emotions between the two characters, revealing their hidden depths amidst overt expressions of hatred. I think viewers will find it intriguing to see such a mentor-student relationship. It will be entertaining."
Park Eun-bin echoed this sentiment, stating, "As we navigate our peculiar bond as mentor and student, we aim to create a special synergy. Viewers will likely be curious about why these two characters behave the way they do. I believe all questions will be answered by the end of the series, and audiences will experience psychological changes that lead to a unique catharsis."
Director Kim Jung-hyun concluded by encouraging viewers to enjoy the genre of medical thriller while reflecting on their own experiences of love and hate in relationships.
The Disney Showcase, which took place over two days starting November 20, 2024, allowed attendees from 12 Asia-Pacific countries, including South Korea, Singapore, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Australia, to preview upcoming Disney projects.
