Park Chan-wook Reflects on Queer Themes in JSA During 30th Anniversary Event

On February 4, a special screening and discussion for the film 'Joint Security Area' (공동경비구역 JSA) was held at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Seoul, celebrating CJ ENM's 30th anniversary. Director Park Chan-wook shared insights about the film, revealing that he had considered incorporating queer themes into the narrative. He noted, 'If it had been the 21st century, it might have been possible, but in 1999, it was difficult to realize.' Released in 2000, 'Joint Security Area' humanizes the realities of the Korean divide and has significantly influenced public perception of inter-Korean relations. The film features prominent actors such as Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-hun, Lee Young-ae, and Kim Tae-woo, who joined Park in reflecting on the film's impact during the event. Park expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate the film with the cast and crew, humorously mentioning that actor Shin Ha-kyun was absent due to vacation. He emphasized the importance of the gathering, thanking CJ ENM for facilitating the reunion. Park also lamented that the film's original queer angle was not pursued due to production company resistance, stating, 'It was a challenge to realize this vision in 1999.' CJ ENM, a global powerhouse in IP, announced the selection of 'Joint Security Area' as a visionary work, marking a commitment to opening new chapters in K-culture over the next 30 years. Since 2020, CJ ENM has recognized unique figures in Korean pop culture across various fields, and this year, they spotlighted 'Joint Security Area' as part of their anniversary celebrations.
