Over 2,500 Filmmakers Demand Impeachment and Arrest of President Yoon Suk-yeol

In a significant move, over 2,500 filmmakers, including renowned director Bong Joon-ho, have issued a statement calling for the impeachment and arrest of President Yoon Suk-yeol. The urgent declaration, made on December 7, 2024, demands the removal of Yoon, who they label a 'current offender of insurrection,' citing his recent declaration of martial law as a direct threat to democracy in South Korea.
The filmmakers expressed their disbelief at the situation, stating, 'It is an event that cannot be understood through common sense, and even the most imaginative cinematic creativity would deem it a delusion.' They argue that the most dangerous entity to the existence of South Korea is Yoon Suk-yeol, and that his removal is the most pressing task to protect the democratic republic.
They highlighted the government's unilateral approach to film budget allocations during Yoon's presidency, which they claim has undermined the Film Promotion Committee and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The filmmakers emphasized that halting Yoon's presidential duties is essential to restoring South Korea's international standing.
The statement was supported by prominent figures in the film industry, including directors Kim Il-ran, Byun Young-joo, and actors Kim Hye-soo and Moon So-ri, among others. A total of 2,518 individuals participated in the declaration, which also included support from 77 organizations such as the Korean Independent Film Association and the Korean Cinematheque Association.
The filmmakers condemned Yoon's martial law declaration, which they described as unconstitutional and reminiscent of military dictatorship. They criticized the government's actions, which they believe have violated the rights of citizens and undermined the independence of constitutional institutions.
The statement concluded with a call for immediate action against Yoon, urging for his presidential duties to be suspended and for him to be impeached and arrested. They warned that the current political climate poses a significant risk to the safety and rights of the South Korean people, and that the responsibility for this lies squarely with Yoon Suk-yeol.
