Oh Jung-se to Portray a Compelling Villain in 'Good Boy'

Actor Oh Jung-se is set to create another unforgettable villain character in the upcoming JTBC drama 'Good Boy' (굿보이), which premieres on May 31. In this new series, he plays Min Joo-young, a customs officer who secretly wields power over the moral compass of society, promising to deliver a strong presence that will shake the lives of the five young leads, including Park Bo-gum, Kim So-hyun, Lee Sang-yi, Heo Sung-tae, and Tae Won-seok.
Known for his detailed performances, Oh describes Min Joo-young as a 'real-life monster' with an ordinary face, one that has existed in the past, is present today, and will continue to exist in the future. He aims to explore the character's complexity, stating, "After declaring 'I am the villain,' I wanted to peel back the layers like an onion, constantly revealing 'What kind of villain is he?' and 'What is he capable of?'" This approach reflects his desire to build a multi-dimensional antagonist.
Oh Jung-se elaborates, "I wanted to express the most significant change through subtle transformations. I aimed to reveal the essence of Min Joo-young, the ugliest monster with the most ordinary face." He meticulously crafted the character's appearance, suggesting that while he looks neat on the outside, he wears the most expensive clothing, emphasizing the 'banality of evil' through detail.
He highlights a particular line from Min Joo-young, "I don’t remember well," reflecting on his childhood memories of adults lying on TV. He notes, "Monsters hiding behind power and capital still exist among us. We will continue to live alongside these monsters, and we must remember, punish, and keep them in check." This insight blurs the lines between character and contemporary society, raising anticipation for how Min Joo-young will leave a mark on viewers.
In stark contrast to Min Joo-young is Yoon Dong-joo (played by Park Bo-gum), a passionate youth driven by a sense of justice. The tension between the seemingly indifferent Min Joo-young and the idealistic Yoon Dong-joo is expected to heighten the drama's suspense. Oh Jung-se hopes that Min Joo-young's mask will be removed by Yoon Dong-joo, explaining, "While Min Joo-young appears to live a dry life, his violent tendencies occasionally surface. I wanted to express that violence as intensely as possible within the drama's limits to provoke Yoon Dong-joo further."
Regarding his chemistry with Park Bo-gum, Oh said, "What can I say? I wanted to be caught by him quickly, joyfully, and thoroughly," hinting at their dynamic relationship in the series. He added that Park is a colleague from whom he learned a lot, emphasizing the depth of their interaction beyond a simple good versus evil narrative. This brief yet powerful statement amplifies the excitement for the intense confrontation between 'Good Boy' Yoon Dong-joo and 'Bad Boy' Min Joo-young.
'Good Boy' is a comedic action youth investigation drama about medalists who become police officers, fighting against a world rife with corruption and dishonesty. Directed by Shim Na-yeon, known for the critically acclaimed 'Monster' and the popular 'Bad Mother,' and written by Lee Dae-il, who has delivered unique genre works like 'Life on Mars' and the 'Advisor' series, the show is highly anticipated. It will air its first episode on Saturday, May 31, at 10:40 PM and will be available for global audiences on Amazon Prime Video.
