Oasis Faces Backlash Over Racist Comment by Liam Gallagher

The British band Oasis has found itself embroiled in a racism controversy following a post by member Liam Gallagher. On July 1, Gallagher took to his social media account to use the term "칭총 (Ching chong)," a derogatory phrase aimed at East Asians that mocks the sounds of the Chinese language. This term has a long history of being used as a racial slur, with records indicating that Korean immigrant Mary Baek Lee was subjected to similar taunts in 1906.
Gallagher's casual use of this expression drew immediate criticism from fans, with one pointing out that it was a racist remark and urging him not to use such language. In response, Gallagher questioned, "Why?" Despite fans expressing concern that other followers might be offended, he dismissed their worries, telling them to "calm down."
As the backlash intensified, Gallagher deleted the controversial post and issued an apology, stating, "It wasn’t intentional, but I’m sorry if I upset anyone. I love you all and don’t discriminate. Peace and love." However, fans remained skeptical of his sincerity, noting that his initial post lacked context and that he had engaged in a back-and-forth with fans instead of showing genuine remorse.
This incident is particularly contentious as Oasis is set to perform in South Korea for the first time in 16 years. The band previously held their first concert in South Korea in 2006, where they expressed their delight at the enthusiastic response from fans, calling it the "best show ever" and praising the Korean audience. They returned for a second concert three years later, celebrating the warm reception with a party.
After disbanding, Oasis announced a reunion tour in 2024, including stops in South Korea and Japan, much to the excitement of fans who have been eagerly awaiting their return. However, Gallagher's recent actions have cast a shadow over the upcoming performances.
Oasis is scheduled to perform at Goyang Sports Complex in South Korea on October 21 at 8 PM, followed by concerts at Tokyo Dome in Japan on October 25 and 26.
