The court upheld the original sentence on June 27, 2025, under the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes, specifically for incestuous rape. 

A was accused of raping his daughter, B, 277 times from 1985 until recently. B reportedly suffered abuse starting from the second grade and attempted to escape multiple times as an adult, but her efforts were unsuccessful. As a result of A's actions, B underwent four pregnancies and abortions. Additionally, A is charged with sexually assaulting his granddaughter, C, before she turned 10 years old.

On June 28, former President Yoon Suk-yeol appeared at the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office in Seocho-gu for questioning by the special investigation team regarding insurrection allegations. However, the team reported that Yoon has been uncooperative since 1:30 PM, effectively halting the investigation after only about an hour of questioning. 

During a briefing at 3:15 PM, Special Prosecutor Park Ji-young stated that the morning session had proceeded well, but after lunch, Yoon's legal team demanded a change of investigators, leading to his refusal to enter the interrogation room. Park emphasized that not entering the room is tantamount to refusing to appear, likening it to a defendant sitting in the audience rather than at the defendant's table in court. 

In the morning session, the special investigation team, led by Police Chief Park Chang-hwan, questioned Yoon regarding allegations of obstructing the execution of an arrest warrant. Yoon's legal representatives raised concerns, claiming that Park was the one who directed the illegal arrest and had been reported for it. However, Park clarified that the execution of the arrest warrant was under the jurisdiction of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials, asserting that Park was not involved. This explanation was reportedly communicated to Yoon's team. 

Park further stated that simply being reported does not exempt investigators or judicial police officers from their duties, as it could paralyze the criminal justice process. He noted that there is no law preventing a former president from being subject to police investigations, equating the refusal to acknowledge the police system to a denial of justice itself. He also warned that any attempts to obstruct the investigation with false information would be met with a firm response, indicating that they might initiate an investigation into such claims. However, he clarified that they are not currently considering an investigation targeting specific attorneys. 

The special investigation team began questioning at 10:14 AM, which lasted for about an hour before being interrupted. During this time, Yoon did not exercise his right to remain silent and answered questions posed by Chief Park. Park questioned the notion of a suspect choosing their investigator, stating that no one in the country has that privilege. He added that they are still trying to persuade Yoon to continue the investigation. 

If the standoff at the interrogation room persists, the special investigation team may consider it as non-compliance and will evaluate subsequent actions. When asked if they were considering requesting an arrest warrant, Park responded that they would review actions in accordance with criminal procedure law but could not confirm an arrest warrant request at this time. He reiterated that the investigator currently handling the case would be the one to conclude the investigation, indicating that they would not accommodate Yoon's request for a change of investigators.

Recently, I had the opportunity to meet novelist Kang Hwa-gil (39) in Yeonhui-dong, Seoul, where he discussed his latest novel, Healing Light (치유의 빛). While an interview about his work was published on June 19, there were additional insights regarding the fictional city of Anjin that he frequently incorporates into his stories.

Kang revealed that Anjin originated from his short story "Nicola Kindergarten," published in the summer 2016 issue of Munhakdongne. This peculiar kindergarten set the stage for Anjin, which has since appeared in various works, including his first short story collection, Good People (괜찮은 사람), and his novel Other People (다른 사람). In Healing Light, the narrator's hometown is also Anjin, which has become a symbolic space within the "Kang Hwa-gil Universe."

During our conversation, I asked Kang about the significance of Anjin, which has appeared consistently throughout his works. He explained that he initially did not plan to use Anjin for such an extended period. The idea for Anjin came from needing a unique setting for his stories, and as he wrote, he felt the space lacked depth. He envisioned it as more than just a kindergarten, imagining lakes and various characters that could inhabit this world. Over nearly a decade, he has developed Anjin into a more vibrant and complex place.

When I inquired about the name Anjin, Kang mentioned that he wanted it to be a fictional location that does not exist in Korea. He intentionally avoided assigning it a specific meaning by not choosing a Chinese character for it. He sees Anjin as a blend of both a regional city and a representation of Seoul, reflecting his own experiences of moving frequently during his childhood. This sense of transience and the emotional connections tied to various places have shaped Anjin into a composite of his past.

Kang also noted that while some readers speculate that the name Anjin could imply safety (안전), he enjoys the irony of a seemingly peaceful place where unsettling events occur. He elaborated that Anjin could represent any small city in Korea, but it has become more defined in his mind over time, evolving from a vague concept to a more concrete setting.

The theme of regional identity is significant in Kang's work, as he grew up in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, before moving to Seoul in his mid-twenties. He expressed that the disparities between the provinces and the capital have influenced his writing, prompting him to explore the regions he has lived in through his stories.

As we wrapped up our discussion, I asked if Anjin would continue to appear in his future works. Kang expressed uncertainty, noting that while he once thought he would only use it for a limited time, he finds himself drawn back to it. He acknowledged that the city holds a nostalgic allure for him, making it likely that he will revisit it in his writing.

Kang's characters often recur in his stories, leading to questions about their identities. He explained that he enjoys creating a sense of continuity by reusing names and traits, allowing readers to recognize familiar elements while also exploring new dimensions of these characters.

Around 9:50 AM, Yoon departed his residence in a black van and arrived at the courthouse shortly after, passing through the east gate of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office. The van briefly stopped on the uphill path leading to the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office before heading to the entrance. Initially, Yoon's team had indicated they would enter through the underground parking, stating they would not comply with a public summons, but they later retracted this and opted for a public appearance in the lobby.

In preparation for Yoon's arrival, the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office set up metal and plastic barricades around 8 AM to block vehicle access to the underground parking. A police tactical unit of 480 officers and personnel from the Presidential Security Service were also deployed.

Baek concluded, "Today's appearance before the special prosecutor does not absolve him of guilt; it is merely the starting point for uncovering the truth. The special prosecutor must conduct a thorough investigation into the charges of insurrection and power-related corruption. Yoon must kneel before history and the people, apologize, and face the appropriate legal consequences."
