Nurse A Sentenced for Abusing Newborns in Cheongju

A nurse's aide has been sentenced to 1 year and 2 months in prison for repeatedly abusing newborns at a postpartum care center in Cheongju. The ruling was made by Chief Judge Shin Yoon-joo of the Cheongju District Court on June 22, 2025, after the 45-year-old defendant, referred to as A, was found guilty of violating the Child Welfare Act (child abuse). In addition to the prison sentence, A is required to complete 40 hours of a child abuse treatment program and is prohibited from working in child-related institutions for three years.
The abuse occurred over a two-month period starting in May of last year, during which A was accused of mistreating infants on 45 separate occasions. Specific acts included slapping a four-day-old infant in the face, forcefully throwing them down, and placing a handkerchief in the mouth of a crying baby, as well as lifting them solely by the neck.
Investigations revealed that A's actions stemmed from the stress of the job and frustration with crying infants. Judge Shin emphasized the severity of the crimes, stating that a nurse's aide is expected to protect newborns, yet A committed these acts numerous times. However, the judge opted not to impose a custodial sentence, citing that A has minor children and no one else to care for them.
