On June 23, Severance Hospital held a groundbreaking ceremony for the 'Min Yoongi Treatment Center' on the first floor of the Jejunggwan building. Suga has consistently shown a commitment to charitable activities and has maintained a keen interest in mental health issues, particularly adolescent depression, throughout his career with BTS. He has been exploring ways to leverage his musical talents to provide assistance.

In November of last year, Suga began discussions with Professor Cheon Geun-ah, a leading expert in child psychiatry at Severance Hospital. Through several meetings, they recognized the need for tailored, life-cycle appropriate treatments for individuals with ASD, which cannot be achieved through short-term interventions alone. They agreed on the necessity of establishing a specialized treatment center capable of providing long-term support for over ten years, leading Suga to pledge a donation of 5 billion KRW to Severance Hospital, marking the largest donation ever made by an artist to the Severance Children's Hospital and Yonsei Medical Center.

Following this, Suga and Professor Cheon discussed the construction of the treatment center and the development of a music-based social skills training program for children and adolescents with ASD from late last year to early this year. This collaboration resulted in the creation of the 'MIND' program, which integrates musical content into existing social skills training.

The MIND program stands for enhancing interaction and sensory experiences through music, providing opportunities for social relationship formation and communication, learning to build connections within a community, and respecting individual diversity while fostering a cohesive society. Participants in this program will engage in playing instruments, singing, writing to music, and expressing their emotions and thoughts through music and writing.

From March to June of this year, Suga dedicated his weekends to working directly with children with ASD to develop the program. He played instruments alongside the children, encouraging them to match rhythms and harmonies, and facilitating emotional expression through music. He also taught them how to play instruments themselves.

As the program progressed, the children's emotional and verbal expressions significantly improved, and they developed social skills through collaboration and patience. For instance, Oh (10 years old) and Lee (12 years old), who previously showed little engagement during language therapy, began to select instruments independently and demonstrated talent in keeping rhythm.

During group sessions, diverse emotional expressions emerged. Kim (18 years old), who played the saxophone and had limited verbal and emotional expression, began to show emotions through facial expressions during collaborative activities and responded positively to the therapist's attention and praise.

The program has proven effective in helping children with limited verbal abilities form social relationships.

In the future, the Min Yoongi Treatment Center plans to enhance the MIND program and establish a self-sustaining music project model. To ensure the program's sustainability and professionalism, they will also systematize training for experts in various therapeutic fields.

Once construction of the Min Yoongi Treatment Center is completed in September, new regular program sessions will be introduced. These will include music-based social skills training for individuals with ASD and other developmental disabilities, as well as expanded sessions for existing therapies like ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) and language therapy. Additionally, clinical research and academic publications will be pursued to objectively validate the effectiveness of the MIND program.

Professor Cheon expressed gratitude for Suga's genuine contributions and volunteer work over the past few months, stating, "I am deeply impressed by Suga's consistent and sincere attitude. The ultimate goal of the Min Yoongi Treatment Center and the MIND program is to help children with autism grow into independent and healthy members of society through music, while also alleviating biases and improving perceptions of disabilities."

2PM's Junho Makes Solo Comeback with 'Simple Dance'

Hwang Ui-jo, a 33-year-old soccer player who received a suspended prison sentence for illegal filming, attended the first hearing of his appeal on June 19 at the Seoul Central District Court in Seocho-gu, Seoul. According to the regulations of the Korea Football Association, if a player receives a prison sentence of one year or more, they are barred from national team selection for five years. If they receive a suspended sentence, they cannot be selected for two years following the expiration of the probation period. Should Hwang's initial sentence be confirmed, his chances of continuing as a national team player would be severely impacted.

During the first appeal hearing on June 19, Hwang's legal team argued that he is remorseful, has no prior convictions, and has dedicated himself to the national team, suggesting that the initial sentence was too harsh. Conversely, the prosecution contended that the sentence was too lenient, and the victims' representatives have called for a severe punishment.

The victims' attorney, Lee Eun-hee, stated that when the case first came to light, Hwang claimed there was no illegal filming and circulated press releases that identified the victims' professions and marital statuses. Hwang was charged with illegally filming sexual acts without consent on four occasions between June and September 2022, with two victims identified. The initial court ruling found him guilty regarding one victim but acquitted him concerning another victim, whom he recorded during a video call. The court acknowledged the severity of the offenses but considered Hwang's acknowledgment of his actions, his remorse, and the substantial amount he paid in compensation as mitigating factors in sentencing.

A 63-year-old Mongolian man underwent a liver transplant at Asan Medical Center in January after his health deteriorated due to chronic hepatitis D, which was diagnosed in 2022. He received a liver donation from his son and has since recovered. Meanwhile, a 5-year-old Russian boy diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor received proton therapy at Samsung Medical Center last December after failing to improve with radiation treatment in Russia.

In 2022, South Korea welcomed 1.17 million foreign patients, nearly doubling from 610,000 in 2023. This figure represents a 140% increase compared to 490,000 in 2019, prior to the pandemic. While many Japanese and Chinese patients seek cosmetic and dermatological treatments, there is a notable rise in patients from essential medical fields as well. Experts predict that the number of foreign patients could reach 1.5 million this year, with a steady influx from countries beyond Japan and China.

The financial expenditure by foreign patients has also surged. According to the Korea Tourism Organization's data lab, foreign medical spending from January to May 2023 reached 714.5 billion KRW, a 74.9% increase from 408.4 billion KRW during the same period last year. The number of transactions rose from 991,057 to 1,492,354, marking a 50.5% increase, with the average payment per transaction rising by 16% from 412,000 KRW to 478,000 KRW. Medical professionals attribute this growth to the rising popularity of K-pop and the Korean Wave, which has drawn attention to 'K-Medical' services.

The medical community is particularly focused on patients from Mongolia and Russia. The number of Mongolian patients peaked at 25,731 last year after a decline during the pandemic, while Russian patients increased to 16,622 in 2022 from a low of around 6,000 during 2020-2021. Despite the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the trend of Russian patients seeking treatment in South Korea is evident.

In terms of medical specialties, internal medicine is the most sought-after field among Mongolian and Russian patients, contrasting with Japanese and Chinese patients who primarily seek dermatology and plastic surgery. Many Mongolian and Russian patients come to South Korea for severe conditions like cancer or organ transplants that are difficult to treat locally. The preference for South Korean hospitals is largely due to the advanced medical technology and infrastructure available. A representative from a general hospital noted that while many foreign patients previously sought health check-ups or cosmetic procedures, there has been a noticeable increase in severe cases since 2023. 

Interestingly, not only the wealthy are opting for medical tourism in South Korea; some patients are selling their homes or raising funds to afford treatment. Recently, South Korean hospitals ranked highly in the '2025 Asia-Pacific's Best Specialized Hospitals' list by Newsweek, excelling in essential medical fields such as oncology, cardiology, and endocrinology. A representative from a university hospital in Seoul mentioned that foreign patients often compare the quality of medical services and care when choosing overseas treatment, with some Russians initially considering Turkey or Israel before opting for South Korea due to better treatment prospects.

Mongolian patients are willing to navigate stringent visa requirements to access medical care in South Korea, which include depositing over 10 million KRW for treatment or presenting a surgery reservation. The South Korean government maintains strict controls to prevent illegal stays. A representative from a large hospital in Seoul stated that despite these high barriers, Mongolian patients are genuinely in urgent need of medical care. Russian patients often face challenges using credit cards due to international sanctions, leading them to remit payments through banks in third countries.

Hospitals are actively working to attract foreign patients, who must cover all medical expenses as they are not enrolled in the national health insurance system. According to the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, hospitals set their own fees for foreign patients, similar to the structure for non-covered services for locals. A representative from a university hospital in Seoul noted that foreign patients may end up paying two to three times more than domestic patients due to additional costs for translation and various services.

As the number of Mongolian and Russian patients rises, more hospitals are hiring dedicated coordinators to assist foreign patients with everything from appointment scheduling to airport pickups and translation services. All of the 'Big 5' hospitals have coordinators for Mongolian and Russian patients, and smaller clinics are also expanding their coordinator teams. Severance Hospital employs two coordinators for each of these nationalities, more than the one each for Chinese and Japanese patients. Chung-Ang University Hospital, which previously only had coordinators for English and Russian, recently hired a coordinator specifically for Mongolian patients in March. Medical professionals emphasize that patient satisfaction significantly depends on effective communication during the examination and treatment process, prompting more hospitals to establish dedicated teams of coordinators.

2022년 한국은 117만 명의 외국 환자를 맞이했으며, 이는 2023년 61만 명에서 거의 두 배로 증가한 수치이다. 이 수치는 2019년 팬데믹 이전의 49만 명과 비교해 140% 증가한 것이다. 많은 일본 및 중국 환자들이 미용 및 피부과 치료를 찾는 반면, 필수 의료 분야의 환자 수가 눈에 띄게 증가하고 있다. 전문가들은 외국 환자 수가 올해 150만 명에 이를 것으로 예상하며, 일본과 중국을 넘어서는 국가들로부터의 지속적인 유입이 있을 것으로 보인다.

외국 환자들의 재정 지출도 급증했다. 한국관광공사의 데이터에 따르면, 2023년 1월부터 5월까지 외국 의료 지출은 7145억 원에 달하며, 이는 지난해 같은 기간의 4084억 원에서 74.9% 증가한 수치이다. 거래 수는 991,057건에서 1,492,354건으로 증가하여 50.5% 증가했으며, 거래당 평균 지불액은 412,000원에서 478,000원으로 16% 상승했다. 의료 전문가들은 K-pop과 한류의 인기가 'K-의료' 서비스에 대한 관심을 끌었다고 분석하고 있다.

의료 전문 분야에서 내과는 몽골 및 러시아 환자들 사이에서 가장 많이 찾는 분야로, 일본 및 중국 환자들이 주로 피부과와 성형외과를 찾는 것과 대조적이다. 많은 몽골 및 러시아 환자들은 현지에서 치료하기 어려운 암이나 장기 이식과 같은 중증 질환으로 한국에 온다. 한국 병원에 대한 선호는 주로 첨단 의료 기술과 인프라 때문이며, 한 종합병원 관계자는 많은 외국 환자들이 이전에 건강 검진이나 미용 시술을 찾았으나 2023년부터 중증 사례가 눈에 띄게 증가했다고 언급했다.

흥미롭게도, 부유한 사람들만 한국에서 의료 관광을 선택하는 것이 아니다. 일부 환자들은 치료비를 마련하기 위해 집을 팔거나 자금을 모으고 있다. 최근 한국 병원들은 뉴스위크의 '2025 아시아 태평양 최고의 전문 병원' 목록에서 높은 순위를 기록하며, 종양학, 심장학, 내분비학과 같은 필수 의료 분야에서 두각을 나타냈다. 서울의 한 대학병원 관계자는 외국 환자들이 해외 치료를 선택할 때 의료 서비스와 치료의 질을 비교하는 경우가 많으며, 일부 러시아 환자들은 처음에 터키나 이스라엘을 고려하다가 한국의 더 나은 치료 전망으로 선택한다고 말했다.

몽골 환자들은 한국에서 의료 서비스를 받기 위해 1천만 원 이상의 치료비를 예치하거나 수술 예약을 제시하는 등 엄격한 비자 요건을 감수할 의향이 있다. 한국 정부는 불법 체류를 방지하기 위해 엄격한 통제를 유지하고 있다. 서울의 한 대형 병원 관계자는 이러한 높은 장벽에도 불구하고 몽골 환자들이 실제로 긴급한 의료 서비스가 필요하다고 밝혔다. 러시아 환자들은 국제 제재로 인해 신용카드 사용에 어려움을 겪고 있어 제3국의 은행을 통해 송금하는 경우가 많다.

병원들은 외국 환자를 유치하기 위해 적극적으로 노력하고 있으며, 이들은 국민 건강 보험 시스템에 가입되어 있지 않기 때문에 모든 의료 비용을 부담해야 한다. 한국보건산업진흥원에 따르면, 병원들은 외국 환자에 대한 수수료를 자율적으로 설정하며, 이는 지역 주민을 위한 비보장 서비스의 구조와 유사하다. 서울의 한 대학병원 관계자는 외국 환자들이 번역 및 다양한 서비스에 대한 추가 비용으로 인해 국내 환자보다 2배에서 3배 더 많은 비용을 지불할 수 있다고 언급했다.

몽골 및 러시아 환자 수가 증가함에 따라, 더 많은 병원들이 외국 환자들을 위해 예약 일정 조정, 공항 픽업 및 번역 서비스 등 다양한 지원을 제공하는 전담 코디네이터를 고용하고 있다. '빅 5' 병원 모두 몽골 및 러시아 환자를 위한 코디네이터를 두고 있으며, 소규모 클리닉들도 코디네이터 팀을 확장하고 있다. 세브란스 병원은 이들 국적별로 각각 두 명의 코디네이터를 두고 있으며, 중국 및 일본 환자에 대해서는 각각 한 명씩 두고 있다. 중앙대학교병원은 이전에 영어 및 러시아어 코디네이터만 있었으나, 최근 3월에 몽골 환자를 위한 코디네이터를 새로 고용했다. 의료 전문가들은 환자 만족도가 검사 및 치료 과정에서의 효과적인 의사소통에 크게 의존한다고 강조하며, 더 많은 병원들이 전담 코디네이터 팀을 구성하고 있다.
