North Korean Defector Lee Soon-sil Shares Unique Economic Perspective on MBN's 'Dongchimi'

On February 15, 2025, the MBN show 'Dongchimi' aired an episode titled 'Everyone is Rich Except Me!' featuring North Korean defector and entrepreneur Lee Soon-sil. During the show, Kim Seung-hyun discussed how his wife insists on using only the best products for their child, including the most expensive formula and a high-end crib. He expressed his concerns about the costs, suggesting they should be more mindful of prices. In response, Sayuri shared her own experience, stating that while she buys inexpensive clothes for herself, she prefers to invest in warmer, pricier clothing for her child, reflecting a mother's love.
Lee Soon-sil recounted her harrowing journey, revealing that she was repatriated to North Korea eight times before successfully escaping on her ninth attempt. Upon arriving in South Korea, she became captivated by the prospect of making money. She started a restaurant at a construction site, which allowed her to open a cold noodle shop that reportedly earns 700 million won a month, astonishing the audience.
She admitted that her focus in South Korea has been solely on earning money, noting her initial confusion with the currency system, having transitioned from using won to dealing with thousands and millions. Consequently, her husband manages their finances.
Lee also shared a surprising detail about her frugality, stating that her monthly credit card bill is only 5,000 won. She revealed that she often scavenges for items, including a bed she found 17 years ago, and she still refrains from buying new socks. This revelation left the audience in disbelief.
When Kim Seung-hyun asked if she ever indulges in hobbies or receives gifts, Lee mentioned a vintage shop near Sadang Station where she bought clothes for just 4,000 won, which she wears to award ceremonies and lectures.
