NewJeans Members Express Shock Over Court Ruling Amid Contract Dispute
The members of NewJeans (뉴진스) — Minji (민지), Hani (하니), Danielle (다니엘), Haerin (해린), and Hyein (혜인) — recently shared their feelings following a court ruling that has temporarily halted their independent activities. After the first hearing regarding a request for a preliminary injunction filed by their agency, Ador, the group expressed their shock at the decision during an interview with BBC Korea on March 26, 2025.
Danielle reflected on the ruling, stating, "I truly expected a different outcome, and I remember everyone being shocked when the news broke. We didn’t start this fight to gain sympathy; we just wanted to pursue what we love properly."
Minji added, "It’s incredibly cruel to think that after enduring significant mental distress, we would have to return to that company and face those challenges again."
Hyein noted that while some may believe they are in a position where they can do anything they want, the reality is quite different. "We’ve finally found the courage to voice our frustrations after enduring so much injustice, yet the situation is not unfolding in our favor. This alone speaks volumes about our struggle."
Hani shared their biggest fear: "Our greatest concern is whether we can continue doing this work. That’s why we keep pushing forward. However, this fear lingers in the back of our minds because anything can happen. Just two years ago, I never imagined we would be in this situation."
She continued, "There’s uncertainty about our future. It’s possible we might not be able to continue our activities, and I desperately want to avoid that."
Minji acknowledged their anxiety, saying, "We are not without fear. We knew that once we held the press conference, we would face a flood of judgments and evaluations. We understand the immense responsibility that comes with every word and action."
Reflecting on the past year, Hyein described it as feeling like filming a documentary. "Every day is filled with uncertainty about what tomorrow will bring, so I live with the mindset of just getting through today. There were times I questioned whether I should be dealing with so much worry, but ultimately, it has been a process of finding solutions, and I’m gradually feeling better."
The members of NewJeans are navigating a challenging period as they seek to assert their independence and voice their concerns about their agency's practices.
