NewJeans Faces Potential Chart Disappearance Amid Tampering Allegations
The K-pop group NewJeans is reportedly at risk of vanishing from music charts due to serious allegations of tampering. On December 13, the Korea Music Content Association (음콘협) issued a statement addressing the ongoing tampering controversy involving former Ador CEO Min Hee-jin. The association expressed deep concern over the widespread nature of tampering in the music industry, highlighting that such practices could occur not only among smaller agencies but also larger ones.
The association called for Min to clarify her stance on the allegations, which include claims of attempting to lure NewJeans members away from their agency and other misconduct. They urged her to provide clear and factual responses to dispel the ongoing speculation and restore integrity to the industry.
NewJeans, who recently terminated their contract with Ador on November 29, asserted that they would continue to use their name and would not be liable for any penalties or lawsuits, claiming that Ador breached their contract. In response, Ador has filed a lawsuit to confirm the validity of the contract.
The association also announced plans to exclude albums and sales from agencies under investigation for tampering from their Circle Chart data, which feeds into major music programs and awards shows, including M Countdown (엠카운트다운) and the Golden Disc Awards (골든디스크).
The ongoing situation has raised significant concerns about the future of the K-pop industry, with calls for legal reforms to prevent such tampering practices from undermining the sector's integrity.
