New Seoul Eastern District Prosecutor Im Eun-jung Vows to Reform the Prosecutor's Office

On July 6, Im Eun-jung, the newly appointed head of the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office, expressed her commitment to fulfilling the role of a 'funeral director' for the prosecutor's office. In a Facebook post reflecting on her first day, she stated, 'I will do my best to handle the funeral of the prosecution.'
Im recalled her involvement as a witness in the fact-finding team established following the #MeToo movement initiated by prosecutor Seo Ji-hyun in February 2018. She noted that if proper reforms had been implemented back then, the current wave of calls for reform would not be so overwhelming.
She shared her initial aspiration to be a doctor who could heal the prosecution but acknowledged her limitations, saying, 'I have long thought that I would become a funeral director for the prosecution.' She emphasized the importance of concluding one era well to pave the way for a new one, asserting that even a funeral director has a significant role to play.
In her inaugural speech on July 4, Im also addressed the issues of targeted investigations and leniency towards certain individuals and groups, stating, 'It is a fact that such practices have been blatantly carried out. If we do not show a changed image, I believe the prosecution may face a reform close to disbandment.'
