Netflix's New Medical Drama 'Trauma Center' Features Heroic Doctor

The highly anticipated Netflix drama '중증외상센터' (Trauma Center) stars actor Ju Ji-hoon as the lead character, Dr. Baek Kang-hyeok, a muscular physician who saves lives, pilots helicopters, and engages in thrilling action. Set to premiere on January 24, 2025, this series marks a return to the medical drama genre after a hiatus due to conflicts in the healthcare sector. The first four episodes showcase a blend of comic elements and real-world issues, delivering humor amidst serious themes.

Director Lee Do-yoon, who adapted the series from the webtoon '중증외상센터: 골든아워' (Trauma Center: Golden Hour) by author Han San-ika, expressed hopes that the show could soften the sharp conflicts present in society today. He noted, 'Given the ongoing deep-seated conflicts, I was concerned about the timing of the release. However, I believe that the fantasy, action, and comedy elements in this work might help ease some of those tensions.'

The narrative follows the genius surgeon Dr. Baek as he navigates the chaotic environment of a university hospital's trauma unit. The series does not shy away from critiquing the healthcare system, portraying a hospital that prioritizes profit over patient care. Director Lee emphasized that the show is lighthearted, with no clear villains, and encourages viewers to reflect on the characters' transformations, particularly that of Director Choi, who initially opposes the protagonist.

Ju Ji-hoon described the series as a 'refreshing and exhilarating action drama' that incorporates fantastical elements. He mentioned that the production team aimed to immerse viewers in the story through engaging cinematography, music, and performances, rather than focusing on the plausibility of certain scenes.

The chemistry between the two male leads is also noteworthy, with actor Choo Young-woo portraying the endearingly clumsy yet skilled intern Yang Jae-won. Director Lee shared that despite initial doubts about Choo's lack of leading role experience, he delivered a compelling performance by the final episode, convincingly embodying a life-saving doctor.
