Netflix's 'Gwangjang' Marks So Ji-sub's Return in a Gripping Noir Action Series

Netflix is set to make a bold move with the global release of its original series 'Gwangjang' on June 6. This highly anticipated show marks the return of actor So Ji-sub and promises to deliver a quintessential Korean noir action experience.
Based on a popular webtoon of the same name, 'Gwangjang' follows Nam Gi-joon (played by So Ji-sub), who returns to the world he left behind 11 years ago after the death of his brother, seeking revenge. The narrative explores the brutal laws of a violent world filled with bloodshed, the clash of power, and the remnants of broken relationships, setting it apart from typical action dramas.
So Ji-sub is making his comeback to the action genre after nearly 12 years since his film 'Company Man.' He expressed, "Gi-joon is strong enough not to lose to anyone, but he carries an indelible scar within him. I hope that intensity resonates with the viewers." His character is expected to leave a strong impression as he balances physical action with emotional depth.
The series boasts a stellar cast, including seasoned actors like Heo Jun-ho, Cha Seung-won, Lee Bum-soo, Jo Han-cheol, Lee Joon-hyuk, Gong Myung, Choo Young-woo, and Ahn Gil-kang, all of whom are set to enhance the show's immersive experience. Notably, Cha Seung-won plays the hidden power player Cha Young-do, hinting at a fierce rivalry with So Ji-sub's character. Gong Myung portrays the heir Gu Joon-mo, while Lee Joon-hyuk plays a pivotal role in the revenge narrative, adding to the noir's signature tension.
The main poster released on May 22 features So Ji-sub with bloodied hands, staring intensely ahead, accompanied by the striking tagline, "If you start, you must die to end it," encapsulating the series' dark atmosphere. The trailer showcases a tense sequence beginning at his brother's funeral, leading to Gi-joon's vengeful actions. The interplay of baseball bats and hand-to-hand combat, along with Heo Jun-ho's line, "If you commit a crime, you must pay the price," hints at the harsh rules of this world.
The intricate relationships among the characters surrounding Nam Gi-joon are also a key point of interest. Viewers can expect chilling smiles from Gong Myung, ambitions masked in cold calculations from Choo Young-woo, rage from Ahn Gil-kang, and the strategic mind of Jo Han-cheol, all of which contribute to a gripping conflict as they react to Gi-joon's return.
Audience anticipation is already high, with comments like, "So Ji-sub's gaze alone completes the noir," and "This lineup is a must-watch!" flooding social media.
Netflix's 'Gwangjang' will premiere on June 6 at 4 PM, featuring a total of 11 episodes.
