On July 8, the 59th Cheongryong Volunteer Awards ceremony took place at the Seoul Press Center, where awardees proudly held their plaques. Kwak Han-gil tragically lost his life last January while rescuing a truck driver involved in an accident on the Gyeongbu Expressway, at the age of 49. On this day, the Chosun Ilbo and the National Police Agency honored him posthumously with the Cheongryong Volunteer Award for his bravery.

The Cheongryong Volunteer Awards, now in its 59th year, recognize the contributions of police officers dedicated to public safety and citizens who assist those in need. The ceremony was attended by approximately 100 people, including Chosun Ilbo President Bang Jun-ho, Kim Byung-woo, the National Police Agency's Personnel Planning Officer, and the head of the Cheongryong Volunteer Association, Choi Byeong-gap, along with families and colleagues of the awardees. Each recipient received a plaque, a certificate, and a cash prize of 10 million won.

The Loyalty Award (충상) was presented to Baek Won-jin, 49, a police officer stationed in Cambodia. Since August 2022, he has worked as a police consul, successfully rescuing 266 South Koreans kidnapped by local criminal organizations and repatriating 68 Korean criminals.

The Courage Award (용상) was awarded to Shin Jin-hoon, 48, from the Gyeongnam Provincial Police's Criminal Investigation Unit, and Lee Yul-hak, 41, from the Women and Youth Division of the Namyangju Southern Police Station in Gyeonggi Province. Shin apprehended all three suspects involved in the 'Drum Can Murder Case' in Pattaya, Thailand, four months after the incident, while Lee has arrested 20 individuals, including sex offenders and domestic violence perpetrators, since 2020.

The Trust Award (신상) went to Kim Young-bong, 45, from the Seoul Police Agency's Gangseo Division, and Kim Jung-won, 32, from the Suwon Western Police Station in Gyeonggi Province. Kim Young-bong saved a citizen who collapsed from cardiac arrest at a gym last June, while Kim Jung-won has been actively volunteering by distributing meals to the elderly and homeless once a month since founding a police volunteer group in October 2023.

The Benevolence Award (인상) was given to the couple Lee Dae-sung, 70, and Hwang Young-sook, 58, from Gyeongbuk Yeongju, and Ha Sang-hoon, 65, the director of Lifeline. Despite their disabilities, the couple has donated money collected from recycling since 2011. Ha has dedicated 37 years to suicide prevention efforts. Additionally, Sugianto, 31, an Indonesian who assisted in evacuating residents during the recent forest fires in Yeongdeok, received the same honor as Kwak.

Chosun Ilbo President Bang Jun-ho remarked, "Without these individuals, many would have suffered and lost precious lives. Society will never forget your sacrifices and hard work." Kim Byung-woo added, "The good seeds you have sown will return as valuable fruits that brighten our society."

곽한길은 지난해 1월, 경부고속도로에서 사고에 연루된 트럭 기사를 구하다가 안타깝게도 49세의 나이로 생을 마감했다. 이날 조선일보와 경찰청은 그의 용기를 기리기 위해 청룡 자원봉사상을 추서했다.

59년째를 맞이한 청룡 자원봉사상은 공공 안전에 헌신하는 경찰관과 도움이 필요한 이들을 돕는 시민들의 기여를 인정하는 상이다. 시상식에는 조선일보 방준호 사장, 경찰청 인사기획관 김병우, 청룡 자원봉사회 회장 최병갑을 비롯해 수상자들의 가족과 동료 등 약 100명이 참석했다. 각 수상자는 상패, 증서, 1천만 원의 상금을 받았다.

충상(忠賞)은 캄보디아에 배치된 경찰관 백원진(49세)에게 수여되었다. 그는 2022년 8월부터 경찰 영사로 근무하며, 현지 범죄 조직에 의해 납치된 266명의 한국인을 성공적으로 구출하고 68명의 한국 범죄자를 송환했다.

용상(勇賞)은 경남지방경찰청 범죄수사대 신진훈(48세)과 경기도 남양주 남부경찰서 여성청소년과 이율학(41세)에게 수여되었다. 신진훈은 태국 파타야에서 발생한 '드럼통 살인 사건'의 용의자 3명을 사건 발생 4개월 후에 모두 검거하였고, 이율학은 2020년 이후 성범죄자와 가정폭력 가해자 등 20명을 체포하였다.

신상(信賞)은 서울경찰청 강서경찰서의 김영봉(45세)과 경기도 수원서부경찰서의 김정원(32세)에게 수여되었다. 김영봉은 지난해 6월 체육관에서 심정지로 쓰러진 시민을 구했으며, 김정원은 2023년 10월 경찰 자원봉사단체를 창립한 이후 매달 노인과 홈리스에게 식사를 배급하며 활발히 자원봉사 활동을 하고 있다.

인상(仁賞)은 경북 영주에 거주하는 부부 이대성(70세)과 황영숙(58세), 그리고 생명선의 감독 하상훈(65세)에게 수여되었다. 이 부부는 2011년부터 재활용으로 모은 돈을 기부해왔으며, 하상훈은 37년간 자살 예방 활동에 헌신해왔다. 또한 최근 영덕에서 발생한 산불로 주민 대피를 도운 인도네시아인 수기안토(31세)도 곽한길과 같은 영예를 안았다.

Members of SEVENTEEN, Hoshi (호시) and Woozi (우지), are set to begin their mandatory military service in September. Pledis Entertainment announced on July 8 that Woozi will enlist on September 15, followed by Hoshi on September 16. 

While they will not be able to participate in official SEVENTEEN activities during their service, the duo plans to maintain communication with their fans through pre-prepared content. The agency stated that their final official activities before enlistment will include the 'HOSHI X WOOZI FAN CONCERT [WARNING]' and a fan signing event for their fifth studio album, 'SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN'. 

Regarding the enlistment day, the agency requested that fans refrain from attending the training center's entrance ceremony, as it will be a gathering of many soldiers and their families. Instead, they encouraged fans to send their support and encouragement through Weverse. 

Pledis also expressed hope that Hoshi and Woozi would fulfill their military duties diligently and return in good health, asking fans for their continued love and support. 

Hoshi and Woozi, both born in 1996, will be the third and fourth members of SEVENTEEN to enlist, following Jeonghan (정한) and Wonwoo (원우), who enlisted on September 26, 2022, and April 3, 2023, respectively. The group's leader, S.Coups (에스쿱스), was exempted from service due to a knee injury. 

Before their enlistment, Hoshi and Woozi will participate in the 'HOSHI X WOOZI FAN CONCERT [WARNING]' from July 11 to 13, along with other scheduled events, including a fan signing for 'SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN' and a performance at KCON LA 2025.

Yoon Jung-soo Joins the Ranks of Married Men

The special investigation team led by Min Jung-ki, probing allegations related to Kim Geon-hee, conducted searches on July 8 at over ten locations, including the homes and offices of People Power Party members Yoon Sang-hyun, former lawmaker Kim Young-sun, and former prosecutor Kim Sang-min. This follows the initiation of the investigation on July 2, which has already uncovered suspicions of stock manipulation involving Samboo Construction and preferential treatment in the route change of the Seoul-Yangpyeong Expressway, now extending to allegations of election interference by former President Yoon Suk-yeol and his wife.

Yoon Sang-hyun is accused of obstructing the nomination process while serving as the chair of the nomination management committee during the June 2022 local elections and the concurrent National Assembly by-elections. A transcript released by the Democratic Party reveals that on May 9, the day before the announcement of the nomination results, former President Yoon told Myung Tae-kyun, a political broker, to ensure Kim Young-sun received a nomination, stating, "Kim Young-sun has been working hard since the presidential primary, so let’s give her the nomination, but there’s a lot of talk in the party. I’ll talk to Sang-hyun again."

Previously, prosecutors have been investigating whether former President Yoon exerted pressure to secure a nomination for Kim Young-sun in the Changwon, Uichang district in exchange for receiving illegal polling results from Myung on 81 occasions leading up to the 2022 presidential election.

Former prosecutor Kim Sang-min is under suspicion of attempting to secure a nomination for Kim Young-sun’s district through Kim Geon-hee ahead of the April 2022 general elections. Myung claimed through his lawyer in February that Kim Geon-hee had asked Kim Young-sun to support Kim Sang-min, stating, "He worked hard on the investigation into Cho Kuk. Please help him win in Changwon, Uichang." Kim Young-sun attempted to relinquish her district to seek a nomination in Gimhae Gap but was unsuccessful. Under the leadership of Han Dong-hoon, the emergency response committee of the People Power Party, both individuals failed to secure nominations. Subsequently, Kim Sang-min was appointed as a legal advisor to the National Intelligence Service in August of the same year, and prosecutors plan to investigate the circumstances surrounding his appointment.

Separately, the special investigation team also conducted searches at the National Police Agency and Chuncheon Police Station. This is related to an ongoing investigation into allegations that leaders of the Unification Church, including Chairman Han Hak-ja, engaged in overseas gambling worth 600 billion won at a Las Vegas casino, with suspicions that key figures close to Yoon Suk-yeol intervened to suppress the investigation. The special investigation team has secured recordings in which former Unification Church World Headquarters leader Yoon Young-ho stated, "The highest authorities said to prepare for a possible search and seizure under the Foreign Exchange Management Act," and that the police's awareness of the investigation was communicated by key figures close to Yoon.

Additionally, the special investigation team for the Marine Corps is set to summon Kim Tae-hyo, former first deputy director of the National Security Office and considered a close aide to former President Yoon in security matters, for questioning on July 11. Kim is under investigation for allegedly exerting external pressure on the Marine Corps investigation team, among other charges.

Investigation into Election Interference by the Yoon Couple Intensifies

On July 8, 2025, the Seoul Central District Court's Criminal Division 9-2, presided over by Judge Ryu Chang-seong, upheld a fine of 40 million won for a doctor, referred to as A, who was found guilty of violating drug management laws by prescribing medical propofol to actor Yoo Ah-in (39, real name Eom Hong-sik) without maintaining proper medical records. The court dismissed appeals from both the prosecution and the defendant, stating that the first trial had already considered various circumstances in determining the sentence. 

The doctor was charged for administering high doses of medical propofol to Yoo Ah-in without any documented medical examination. In January of the previous year, the prosecution indicted A along with five other doctors for excessively prescribing sleeping pills and propofol to Yoo Ah-in. 

In the first trial, held in August of last year, the court noted that A had issued false prescriptions on six occasions without conducting any examinations, indicating a serious misuse of propofol for profit, and consequently imposed a fine of 40 million won. 

Meanwhile, Yoo Ah-in was sentenced to one year in prison, with a two-year suspended sentence, by the Supreme Court on July 3 for habitual use of propofol, having reportedly received the drug 181 times at various hospitals in Seoul between September 2020 and March 2022.
