Nam Taehyun Under Investigation for DUI During Probation Period

Nam Taehyun (남태현), a former member of the K-pop group WINNER, is currently under police investigation for driving under the influence (DUI) while on probation for a previous drug-related conviction. The Yongsan Police Station in Seoul reported on May 8 that they are looking into the incident involving Nam, who allegedly crashed into a central divider while attempting to overtake another vehicle on the Dongjak Bridge around 4:10 AM on April 27. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the accident, but Nam's blood alcohol concentration was reportedly at a level that would warrant license suspension (0.08% or higher).
In January 2024, Nam was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years, for violating drug laws. He was charged after purchasing methamphetamine via Telegram with broadcaster Seo Min-jae (서민재) and consuming it mixed with alcohol. The investigation began after Seo revealed their drug use on social media, prompting police action. Additionally, while under investigation for drug charges, Nam was involved in a DUI incident in March 2023, which resulted in a fine of 6 million KRW.
Considering that this latest incident occurred during his probation period, police applied for an arrest warrant on May 2, but the court denied the request on May 7, citing insufficient grounds for detention. Authorities plan to conduct further investigations and will soon transfer Nam to the prosecution without detention.
Nam was scheduled to make his comeback at a music festival in Hongdae on May 6 but abruptly canceled the performance on May 4, just a week after being charged with DUI. Reports suggest that he felt pressured by the public backlash regarding his return. His new album is set to be released on May 9.
