Mother Arrested for Allegedly Killing Disabled Newborn

A mother in her thirties has been arrested on charges of murdering her newborn child, who was born with disabilities. On November 25, Judge Kim Seung-joo of the Cheongju District Court conducted a pre-arrest interrogation for the suspect, identified as A, and subsequently issued a warrant for her arrest due to concerns about potential flight risk.

The incident reportedly occurred on October 10 at a postpartum care center in the Heungdeok District of Cheongju, where A is accused of suffocating her one-week-old baby by placing the infant face down. At the time, A and her husband informed the police that they found their child unresponsive in a prone position after waking up.

Initially, the police were investigating the case as involuntary manslaughter. However, upon discovering that the infant had disabilities and was unable to turn over on their own, authorities shifted their focus to a murder investigation. Evidence from the couple's mobile phones suggested a premeditated intent to kill, leading to the issuance of arrest warrants for both parents.

Despite this, the prosecution decided not to pursue charges against the father, taking into account the presence of other dependent children in the family.

A police spokesperson stated, "We believe that A and her husband intentionally killed their disabled child, which is why we requested the arrest warrant. The investigation is ongoing, and we cannot disclose further details at this time."
