MONSTA X's Kihyun Prepares for First Variety Show After Military Service

Kihyun, a member of the popular K-pop group MONSTA X, has shared his determination as he embarks on his first variety show, 'Ryu Student Anam Sun' (류학생 어남선), coinciding with the group's 10th debut anniversary. The production conference for the new E Channel show took place on May 15 at Cinecube Gwanghwamun in Jongno, Seoul, where Kihyun joined actors Ryu Soo-young and Yoon Kyung-ho to discuss the program with MC Koo Young-geun and the press.
'Ryu Student Anam Sun' follows three brothers—Ryu Soo-young, Yoon Kyung-ho, and Kihyun—who travel abroad to learn and create new recipes, showcasing their culinary journey. Ryu Soo-young, known for his cooking skills on various shows, and Yoon Kyung-ho, who gained popularity in the Netflix series 'Trauma Center,' join Kihyun, who recently completed his military service, making this his first variety show appearance.
Kihyun returned to his fans in February after being recognized as an exemplary soldier during his service. In 'Ryu Student Anam Sun,' he takes on the role of the 'special maknae' (youngest member) of the group. Known among fans for his cooking abilities, Kihyun is expected to shine as he balances language skills, culinary talent, and charm.
He expressed, "I’m taking on the role of the special maknae. I just celebrated my 10th debut anniversary yesterday. Many of our fans, 'Monbebe,' know me as someone who can cook a bit. In 'Ryu Student Anam Sun,' I’m returning as a 'Ryu Student' who can cook even better. Please look forward to it!"
Kihyun shared his initial concerns about finding work after military service but felt fortunate to be approached for this show. He mentioned, "I was worried about not having work after my discharge, but they reached out to me right away. I love cooking, so despite my worries, I thought it would be a good challenge. The timing was perfect."
He highlighted the distinct personalities of the three cast members, noting that Yoon Kyung-ho brings humor while also delivering delicious food. Kihyun remarked on his own ability to replicate recipes accurately and fulfill his role as the diligent maknae. Ryu Soo-young, likened to ChatGPT for his keen taste, quickly identifies and corrects any shortcomings in their dishes.
Kihyun also mentioned their camaraderie, stating, "We ate a lot together. I played the role of the PT trainer, guide, and maknae. Ryu Soo-young commented on how fit I looked, even though I missed out on filming 'Sangtal.'"
Yoon Kyung-ho noted Kihyun's influence from MZ culture, sharing a humorous moment where Kihyun danced to the rhythm of music differently from the others. Kihyun added, "I once taught them how to wave for an hour and a half!"
Ryu Soo-young expressed his initial doubts about their cooking abilities but was pleasantly surprised by the results. He praised Kihyun's exceptional memory and culinary sense, stating, "Kihyun never forgets what he learns. His talent for cooking is impressive."
Kihyun reflected on his experience as the youngest member, saying, "I’ve never been the maknae before, and it feels nice to be loved and cherished by the older members. It’s a new experience for me. I want to cook for the members when I get the chance. I have a dish called 'Polpo de Pop' that I’d love to make for them."
He also shared his feelings about filming abroad after military service, expressing immense relief after being confined to the barracks for 18 months. Kihyun concluded, "I realized how much joy food brings me, especially after not being able to enjoy it for so long. I want to show our fans, 'Monbebe,' my genuine passion for cooking through this show."
'Ryu Student Anam Sun' is set to premiere on May 17 at 5:20 PM.
