Minister Lee Joo-ho Expresses Regret Over AI Textbook Legislation
On July 10, 2025, the National Assembly's Education Committee passed a bill that downgrades the AI (Artificial Intelligence) digital textbooks introduced by the previous Yoon Suk-yeol administration to mere 'educational materials.' The Democratic Party of Korea, which holds a majority in the National Assembly, is vigorously pushing this legislation, making its approval in the upcoming plenary session likely. The committee convened to discuss the amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which reclassifies the AI digital textbooks as educational resources rather than core teaching tools. This decision comes just a year after the government invested 530 billion won in these AI textbooks, raising concerns about their future use in schools across the country.
