Military Halts Loudspeaker Broadcasts to North Korea

On June 11, the South Korean military announced the cessation of loudspeaker broadcasts directed at North Korea across all fronts. A military source stated, "The broadcasts were stopped in the afternoon as part of our commitment to restoring trust in inter-Korean relations and promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula."

The loudspeaker broadcasts were reinstated in June 2024 during an emergency National Security Council (NSC) meeting under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, after a six-year hiatus. This decision was made in response to North Korea's continued balloon provocations. However, this recent action marks the end of the broadcasts after just over a year.

The military reportedly operated over 20 fixed loudspeakers and around 10 mobile loudspeakers. Since the end of last year, following North Korea's cessation of balloon provocations, the focus shifted primarily to fixed loudspeakers, with mobile broadcasts being halted. Now, the fixed loudspeaker broadcasts have also been completely stopped.

According to military reports, North Korea's loudspeaker broadcasts targeting South Korea continue as of today, indicating that the South has proactively chosen to suspend its broadcasts first.
