Member of 'SKY Alliance Club' Sentenced to One Year in Prison for Drug Use

A 26-year-old man, identified as Hong, has been sentenced to one year in prison for violating drug laws while being a member of a student club composed of students from prestigious universities in the Seoul metropolitan area. The Seoul Southern District Court's Criminal Division 14, presided over by Judge Jang Seong-hoon, also ordered Hong to pay a fine of 1,010,000 KRW and complete a 40-hour drug rehabilitation program. Hong was arrested and charged for purchasing and using methamphetamine, ecstasy, and LSD while participating in the club, which includes students from 13 universities such as Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Korea University.
The court noted that the type and quantity of drugs involved, as well as the frequency of use, indicated a serious offense. However, they considered Hong's acknowledgment of his actions and his commitment to abstain from drugs in the future when determining his sentence. During the first hearing in September, Hong admitted to all charges and expressed remorse, stating, "Drugs have taken everything from me," and vowed not to ruin his life and family with drugs again.
Additionally, Hong has a prior conviction for producing over 30 videos depicting sexual acts with minors and young adults between November 2017 and March 2018. He was previously sentenced to two years and six months in prison for violations related to the protection of children and adolescents from sexual exploitation and special laws on sexual violence crimes.
